An Interview with Joe R Lansdale
by Nick Gevers INTRODUCTION The publication in 2000 of Joe R. Lansdale's superb retrospective collection, High Cotton: Selected Stories , brings his remarkable career into an opportune focus. For two decades, Lansdale has been a prolific cult author, regaling a dedicated audience with tales expressive of an outrageous gory moralism. His fictional settings, always intensely and laconically authentic, range from the Wild West to alternate worlds to post-holocaust nightmares to the South's utterly seedy underbelly, but Texas is in all of them. Like Neal Barrett, Jr., Lansdale is a subversive Bard of Texas, capturing that state in its entirety and in its every particularity, in its wide surrealistic splendour and in its multiplex gritty intimacy. And like Barrett, he is, simply and universally, a superb storyteller. Joe Lansdale's stories, in all their brilliance, speak for themselves. But here is a glimpse of the man who wields that hypnotic voice, captured in an e-mail interview in August 2000.

Fiction: Coat by Joe R. Lansdale
When James saw the man in the streetlights, he hated him on sight because of the coat. It wasn’t fashionable. If the man had been unfashionable in all other ways he could have ignored it, but no, this was a man who should have known better. He was a man with a good shirt and slacks and fine tie, and the best shoes available, and yet, he wore a coat out of style and certainly one that did not make for a proper appearance. It was an odd coat of undetermined color and absolutely no substance. It had all the grace of a car wreck. It flopped in the winter wind at the lapels like bat wings flexing, caught up in back and whipped backwards like the tail of a swallow. There was no excuse for it really. Sure, he saw plenty of unfashionable people, but this fellow must know better, having acquired the most fashionable and best clothes otherwise. It was not a matter of being uninformed, he was flaunting a disregard for the proper and the respectable, and was therefore insulting the very business James was a part of. Fashion design. There was no use calling him on it, James was certain. A man like that knew how things ought to be. A man with his hair perfectly cut and perfectly combed, and perfectly dressed, except for that horrid coat.

If Texas writer Joe R. Lansdale had been born on a fantasy world, he might be a cross between a lion and a chameleon. His work is full of fierce nobility, and resists being caged. His work changes colors and blends easily into a variety of backgrounds. Joe Lansdale has written horror, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, suspense, westerns, "men's adventure," and just about every other kind of writing you can think of. Joe has done it all, and he keeps on getting better. He won a Bram Stoker award for "The Night They Missed the Horror Show," his novel The Drive-In -nominated for a World Fantasy Award-is like a ride on a runaway Tilt-a-Whirl, and his "Tight Little Stitches in a Dead Man's Back" is probably one of the finest pieces of writing I've ever had the pleasure to read. Just when you think you've got Joe pegged in a particular category, he goes chameleon again. His The Magic Wagon is a bonafide western, complete with a gunfighter and a wrestling monkey. Well, you can't say-you
