  • Sidney Lanier 1842-1881
American poet, critic, essayist, novelist, editor, and travel writer. The following entry provides criticism on Lanier's works from 1905 through 2002.
    INTRODUCTION
Lanier was a nineteenth-century American poet and essayist of the Reconstruction South. A musician as well as a writer, Lanier is remembered for his theory that music and poetry are reciprocally governed by the same metrical principles and characteristics of form and structure.
    Biographical Information
    Major Works
Although Lanier is remembered primarily as a poet, his first published work was the novel Tiger-Lilies (1867) an antiwar novel based on his Civil War experiences. Lanier also explored the interrelationships of music, poetry, emotion, and moral action. These would later emerge as primary themes governing both his poetry and his works of literary criticism. Lanier's nonfiction writing helped produce the income he needed to continue to write verse. A travel handbook about Florida published in 1876 was one such publication. He also edited several classical works for young readers and wrote books of literary criticism including The Science of English Verse (1880) and the posthumously published The English Novel and the Principle of its Development

    Sidney Lanier (1842-1881)
    The Harlequin of Dreams
Swift, through some trap mine eyes have never found,
Dim-panelled in the painted scene of sleep,
Thou, giant Harlequin of Dreams, dost leap
Upon my spirit’s stage. Then Sight and Sound,
Then Space and Time, then Language, Mete and Bound,
And all familiar Forms that firmly keep
Man’s reason in the road, change faces, peep
Betwixt the legs and mock the daily round.
Yet thou canst more than mock: sometimes my tears
At midnight break through bounden lidsa sign
Thou hast a heart: and oft thy little leaven
Of dream-taught wisdom works me bettered years.
In one night witch, saint, trickster, fool divine,
I think thou’rt Jester at the Court of Heaven.
    Laus Mariae
Across the brook of Time man leaping goes
On stepping-stones of epochs, that uprise
Fixed, memorable, midst broad shallow flows
    Of neutrals, kill-times, sleeps, indifferencies.
So mixt each morn and night rise salient heaps:
Some cross with but a zig-zag, jaded pace
From meal to meal: some with convulsive leaps
Shake the green tussocks of malign disgrace:
And some advance by system and deep art
O’er vantages of wealth, place, learning, tact:

    Coach Bob Teel
In the summer of 2007 Coach Bob Teel received a visit from Ellie McKissick and Tommy Ragsdale at his home in Flat Rock, North Carolina. The two were teammates on Coach Teel's first basketball team at Sidney Lanier during the 1955-1956 season. The three spent the day reminising about the good ole days and the success of their team. You see that team made it into the final four of the state basketball tournament held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Coach Teel continued for another seven seasons until 1963. Both McKissick and Ragsdale agree that Coach Teel was an excellent role model and mentor for all the young men he coached. Today at the wonderful age of 83 he is in excellent shape and enjoying life in the Blue Ridge Mountains with his lovely wife, Shirley. The birthplace of Sidney Clopton Lanier, this simple white clapboard cottage is furnished with authentic period pieces and accessories. Items on display include, Lanier's silver alto flute, a tea service, books, a chair, Lanier's wife's wedding dress, and family photographs.
Several weeks after Lanier's birth, his family moved to Griffin, Georgia, where Lanier lived until he was six years old. In 1948, the Lanier family returned to Macon.
As a boy, Lanier became as much at home in the woods of Macon as he was in his home. He enjoyed climbing trees and fishing, and it was here that Lanier honed his skills as a flutist. He often took his handmade reed flute with him to the river bank or into the woods and experimented with sounds to imitate nature.
