Sidney Clopton Lanier was born February 3 , in Macon Georgia , to parents Robert Sampson Lanier and Mary Jane Anderson ; he was mostly of English and American ancestry, with his distant French ancestors having immigrated to England in the 16th century. He began playing the flute at an early age, and his love of that musical instrument continued throughout his life. He attended Oglethorpe University near Milledgeville , Georgia, graduating first in his class shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War He fought in the Civil War, primarily in the tidewater region of Virginia , where he served in the Confederate signal corps. Later, he and his brother Clifford served as pilots aboard English blockade runners . On one of these voyages, his ship was boarded. Refusing to take the advice of the British officers on board to don one of their uniforms and pretend to be one of them, he was captured. He was incarcerated in a military prison in

Lanier was reared by devoutly religious parents in the traditions of the Old South. As a child he wrote verses and was especially fond of music. After graduation in 1860 from Oglethorpe College (now University), Atlanta, Ga., he served in the Civil War until his capture and subsequent imprisonment at Point Lookout, Md., where he contracted tuberculosis. In 1867 he married Mary Day, also of Macon; and in the same year he published his first book, the novel Tiger-Lilies, The Song of the Chattahoochee, a volume of poems, was published in 1877. Appointed to Johns Hopkins University in 1879, he delivered a series of lectures on verse technique, the early English poets, and the English novel, later published as The Science of English Verse Shakspere and his Forerunners (1902), and

Sidney Clopton Lanier Born: February 3, 1842

Died: September 7, 1881 Place: Lynn, North Carolina S idney Clopton Lanier was born on February 3, 1842 in Macon, Georgia. Soon after his birth, his family moved to the town of Griffin, and then they returned to Macon when Sidney was six years old. As a child, he loved the outdoors. His rural Georgia surroundings were perfect for a boy who was content to spend hours on a tree limb in the woods, or pass an afternoon with a fishing pole along a quiet river. As he grew up, Lanier taught himself how to play the flute, and he developed a talent for writing, especially for poetry. His passion for nature and the rural countryside of his youth are woven into much of the music and literature that Lanier would create throughout his life. He did very well as a student, and at 14 he left his hometown of Macon and headed off to Georgia's Oglethorpe College, where he graduated at the top of his class. W ithin a year of his graduation, Lanier heeded the call of the Confederate Army, and he signed on for duty in the Civil War. He served as a scout, and then as an officer on the seas aboard a blockade runner off the coast of North Carolina. His maritime adventures came to an abrupt halt when he was captured by Union troops and imprisoned in the fall of 1864. Prison conditions were poor, of course, and the year that Lanier spent in prison seriously damaged his health. When he was released from prison, he returned to civilian life, married, and fathered four sons. He held several jobs as he tried to support his family and still pursue his love of literature and music. As a result of his wartime experiences, Lanier produced his only novel

Literary San Antonio

Sidney Lanier
Sydney Lanier in 1874 (Courtesy of Special Collections, The Milton S. Eisenhower Library, Johns Hopkins University) As a nineteenth-century travel writer, Frederick Law Olmsted had produced a readable, straightforward description of San Antonio and its tri-cultural inhabitants during the mid-1850's, but Sydney Lanier was the first writer of belletristic importance, especially in the Southern tradition, to describe the city from a more literary perspective. The accomplished Georgia flautist and poet came to San Antonio at the end of 1872, hoping to improve his tubercular condition, the town being, in Lanier's words, "a growing resort for consumptives" (Lanier 202). While here, he wrote a rambling essay based on his visit titled "San Antonio de Bexar," which was published in the July-August 1873 issue of the Southern Magazine . Even though the bulk of the essay is a historical sketch of San Antonio during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, borrowed mostly from H. Yoakum's History of Texas and a few other sources, Lanier took a genuine interest in the city's cultural diversity, its natural and architectural landmarks, and even its climate and topography.

From LoveToKnow 1911
SIDNEY LANIER (1842-1881), American poet, was born at Macon Georgia , on the 3rd of February 1842. He was of Huguenot descent on his father's side, and of Scottish and Virginian on his mother's. From childhood he was passionately fond of music . His subsequent mastery of the flute helped to support him and greatly increased his reputation. At the age of fourteen he entered Oglethorpe College, where, after graduating with distinction, he held a tutorship. He enlisted in the Confederate army in April 1861, serving first in Virginia , and finding opportunities to continue his studies. After the Seven Days ' battles around Richmond , he was transferred to the signal service. About this time the first symptoms of consumption appeared. He subsequently served in a blockade -runner, but his vessel was captured, and he was confined for five months in a Federal prison , his flute proving the best of companions. Exchanged early in 1865, he started home on foot, arriving in a state of exhaustion that led to a severe illness. In 1867 he visited New York in connexion with his novel Tiger Lilies - an immature work, dealing in part with his war experiences, and now difficult to obtain. Later in the same year he took charge of a country school in

LANIER, SIDNEY Sidney Lanier, poet, critic, and musician, was born in Macon, Georgia, on February 3, 1842, the son of Robert S. and Mary Jane (Anderson) Lanier. He graduated from Oglethorpe College in 1860 and at the outbreak of the Civil War qv joined the Macon Volunteers. He participated in several battles and later served as a scout and in the signal service. He was captured on November 2, 1864, and eventually imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland, where hardships and illness led to tuberculosis. After his release in February 1865, he walked home, arriving in Macon on March 15, desperately ill. These experiences are reflected in his antiwar novel Tiger-Lilies (1867) and made the remainder of his life a battle against time, poverty, and ill health. On December 19, 1867, Lanier married Mary Day; the couple had four sons. Lanier practiced law with his father to support his family, and his health grew worse. In 1872 he left his family in Macon and traveled to San Antonio, Texas, via New Orleans, Galveston, Houston, and Austin. He wrote more than 100 letters from Texas, but apparently no poetry. He wrote three short essays: "The Texas Trail in the '70's" (a portion of which was printed under the title "The Mesquit[e] in Texas"), "An Indian Raid in Texas," and "The Mexican Border Troubles." All were published, under the pseudonym Otfall, in the New York World in 1872 and 1873. Lanier's long article "San Antonio de Bexar," with descriptions of places, peoples, and northers, and with historical accounts based on Henderson K. Yoakum'sqv

by Edwin Mims [American (Southern U.S.) Scholar; 1872-1959. Preface The present volume is a biography of Lanier rather than a critical study
of his work. So far as possible, I have told the story in his own words,
or in the words of those who knew him most intimately. If I have erred
in placing undue emphasis on the early part of his career, it was intentional,
for that is the part of his life about which least is known
I have intentionally emphasized his relation to the South, in order to avoid a misconception that he was a detached figure. The bibliographies prepared by Mr. Wills for the "Southern History Association" and by Mr. Callaway for his "Select Poems of Lanier" make one unnecessary for this volume. Of previously published material, I have been greatly indebted to the Memorial by Mr. William Hayes Ward, the fuller sketch by the late Professor W. M. Baskervill, and the volume of letters published by Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons. For new material
