Spring 1998 The Dichotomy in the Piers Plowman Character: Langland's Intent versus Rebel Symbol My research into the political climate in which Piers Plowman was written, especially reading about the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 and the events that led to it, has made me aware that the Piers Plowman the rebels adopted as a symbol of their cause is actually the polar opposite of the Piers Plowman Langland created in an attempt to help preserve the feudal hierarchy and economy. Put another way, the purpose of Langland's Piers was to coax or "guilt" the peasants back to work and the other members of English society to the honorable fulfillment of the obligations their respective social roles demanded, but the peasant rebels latched onto Langland's character as a motivating symbol for their rebellion against the feudal system that the aristocracy and diehards like Langland were convinced was ordained by God. I am fascinated that a writer's obvious intent was so completely ignored and turned upside-down, and that his title character became a symbol for a movement which he regarded as an evil. How did this occur? This dichotomy in the Piers character and the processes that led to the split between Langland's intent in the poem and the rebels' understanding of it merit close examination.

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Davies, William Henry Davies, William Henry (1871-1940), a British author, led a roving life as a tramp, laborer, peddler, and street singer. He told the story of some of his wanderings in his Autobiography of a Super-Tramp (1908). He also wrote several other autobiographical works, including Beggars (1909), The True Traveller (1912), A Poet's Pilgrimage (1918), and Later Days (1925). He described his courtship and marriage in 1923 to a much younger woman in Young Emma (published in 1980, after his death). Davies wrote many poems, 600 appearing in his Collected Poems (1942). Many of the poems are short nature lyrics. Others deal with the grimmer side of his life as a wanderer. Davies also wrote two novels, A Weak Woman (1911) and Dancing Mad (1927).
