She's a dreadlock-wearing, politically liberal, born-again Christian who uses biting humor and sometimes foul language when she describes her deeply held personal faith. Some readers are offended, but her books about her spiritual journey have become national best-sellers. Her newest is called GRACE (EVENTUALLY). It comes out later this month. Kim Lawton visited Lamott in Northern California.

Happy Birthday, Anne Lamott
Merlin Mann I learned via the that today is the birthday of the Bay Area novelist and non-fiction writer, Anne Lamott (of course) Bird by Bird For me and most of the other writers I know, writing is not rapturous. In fact, the only way I can get anything written at all is to write really, really shitty first drafts. Lamott also mentions how she keeps a one-inch square picture frame on her desk. And every time she feels stuck, she picks it up and remembers that all she has to do to get started is fill one square inch with words. Anyhow, Happy 52nd to Anne Lamott, and thanks for the good stuff.

Anne Lamott: 'God's in the Struggle With Us'
Best-selling author Anne Lamott on growing up atheist, being a left-wing Jesus-lover, and what she's learned at 50. Interview by Wendy Schuman
Anne Lamott, dreadlocks intact, the "bad girl" of born-again Christianity, is still figuring out spiritual truth while keeping her progressive values and sense of humor. Author of the best-selling "Operating Instructions" (on having a baby solo), "Traveling Mercies" (on her journey as a Christian), "Bird by Bird" (a classic on writing), Lamott chronicles her life over the last six years in her newest book, "Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith," a recent national best-seller. She spoke with Beliefnet about turning 50, going through menopause, parenting a teenager, avoiding the pitfalls of "success addiction," and her reborn political activism.
I was wondering in what way you think you've grown spiritually in the last few years since "Traveling Mercies." What's changed for you?

The Anne Lamott Story The Thomas Merton Community is very fond of St. Elizabeth Seton School. So, members of the community decided to do something special for the school. One member of our community, Fr. Tim Meier, has a friend whose name is Ann Lamott. Anne Lamott is a very famous writer. She is funny and wise and lots of people enjoy her books. When Fr. Tim found out that we wanted to do something for the school, he invited his friend Anne Lamott to come to Palo Alto to talk about her life and her books. We were sure that people would pay to listen to her and we could give the money we would collect to St. Elizabeth Seton School. Ms. Lamott agreed to come for free and we all became very excited about her visit. The Children of the school made a beautiful poster to welcome our special guest. On the day of the event, over two hundred and fifty people came. Mary Coady, head of the committee that sponsored Ms. Lamott's visit, introduced Fr. Tim. Fr. Tim introduced his friend Anne Lamott to the audience.

"An engaging profile of author and writing instructor Anne Lamott."
Los Angeles Times
The film, a year in the life of the writer, focuses on her gift at demystifying the creative process, the people who inform her life and writing, and the beauty of language and the written arts. It touches upon concerns of universal interest - loss, alienation, loneliness, faith, and the meaning of life and the perhaps less weighty concerns of unfirm thighs, difficult hair, and retail therapy. Annie likes to pass on the "secret of life" that she found written on a computer terminal bearing a picture of Koko the gorilla: "The law of the American jungle: Remain calm and share your bananas."

Grace (Eventually)
Thoughts on Faith
Anne Lamott - Author
add to cart view cart Book: Hardcover Click here for other formats The sharp, funny, and heartfelt follow-up to her bestselling Plan B , Anne Lamott's newest collection is a personal exploration of the faith and grace all around us. In Grace (Eventually): Thoughts on Faith , Lamott examines the ways we're caught in life's most daunting predicaments: love, mothering, work, politics, and maybe toughest of all, evolving from who we are to who we were meant to be. This is a complicated process for most of us, and Lamott turns her wit and honesty inward to describe her own intimate, bumpy, and unconventional road to grace and faith. "I wish grace and healing were more abracadabra kinds of things," she writes in one of her essays, "that delicate silver bells would ring to announce grace's arrival. But no, it's clog and slog and scootch, on the floor, in silence, in the dark." Whether she's writing about her unsuccessful efforts to get her money back from an obstinate carpet salesman, grappling with the tectonic shifts in her relationship with her son as he matures, trying to maintain her faith and humor during politically challenging times, or helping a close friend die with dignity, Lamott seeks out both the divinity and the humanity in herself and everything around her. Throughout these essays, she writes of her struggle to find the essence of her faith, which she uncovers in the unlikeliest places. By turns insightful and hilarious, pointed and poignant

The questions, discussion topics, and author biography that follow are designed to enhance your reading of Anne Lamott's Traveling Mercies . We hope that they will suggest a variety of ways to talk about this delightful and moving story of one woman's journey in faith.
When Anne Lamott was twenty-five, her father died after a long struggle with brain cancer. Over the next few years she herself began to suffer from an overwhelming sense of desperation and fear, which she tried to suppress with alcohol and pills. Although she was managing to write and publish successful novels at the time, it was clear that her life was spinning out of control. In Traveling Mercies , a memoir that sparkles with wry wit and compassion, she now writes about this dark period of her life, and of her turnto her own great surpriseto the community of Christian faith and love she found in a neighborhood church called St. Andrew's. In a book that will be cherished by anyone who has pursued a spiritual search down all sorts of unlikely paths, grieved at the death of friends, or felt bewildered at the challenges that daily life presents to love and courage, Anne Lamott gives us a wise and often humorous account of living in faith.

40. Anne Lamott :: Tender Words
I recently had the pleasure of hearing Ann lamott read and speak in Berkeley.
http://karenswhimsy.com/musings/anne-lamott.htm

One of my favorite books about writing and the art of being a writer, is Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. So when I read that she was going to be speaking locally, I knew I had to go hear her. It was a dark, wet night, but Anne Lamott warmed us all with her loving spirit.
Anne Lamott :: Tender Words
I'm in Berkeley, close to the campus, trying to find a place to park. It's been raining steadily all evening, the roads are wet and shiny, and I'm having a hard time seeing street signs. I'm looking for the First Congregational Church of Berkeley, so I'm hoping I'll see some religious looking building around. Anne Lamott is speaking there tonight, in my mind, a curious venue. By the time I'm done listening to her, I realize that appearing at a church makes perfect sense.
When I finally find the right building, I notice that people have left their umbrellas outside. They stand like little damp soldiers lined along the wall. I lean mine against the wall too, hoping I'll recognize it later. I'm later than I'd hoped, and the pews are already packed, so I'm grateful that I came alone and am able to squeeze myself between some people near the front.
The inside of the church is lovely, with its tall ceiling and royal blue rosette-style stained glass window staring down. The woodwork glows a soft honey color. The seats are lightly padded; the backs straight and hard. There's a mike on stage and a light shines down upon a podium. How long has it been since I've stepped inside a church?
