Goals and Objectives:
1. To provide a survey of the history of anglophone Caribbean literature.
2. To address the theoretical question of how literary canons are formed with reference to the Anglophone Caribbean and English literary canons. Why are specific texts included while other excluded from scholarship and teaching? What is the definition and purpose of literary texts?
3. To evaluate the critical reception of the literary texts we read. We will evaluate the place of each novel we read in the anglophone Caribbean literary canon by examing the extent and nature of its critical reception.
4. To provide students with the research skills necessary to evaluate the critical reception of literary texts in general and of Caribbean texts in particular.

Alizés n°22 American Dream, Urban Nightmare: Edwidge Danticat's Breath, Eyes, Memory and George Lamming's In the Castle of My Skin In the Castle of My Skin Breath, Eyes, Memory In many respects, In the Castle of My Skin and Breath, Eyes, Memory are very distinct novels. The main interest of Lamming’s work lies in the denunciation of colonialism, in the condemnation of its damaging effects such as racism or poverty, and the announcement that its end is close. The apology of decolonization is obvious when the narrator states that “Boy Blue […] had a feeling that it would be nice if some of the people in the village got a bit of the big life” ( CMS 168). In Danticat’s novel, it is the feminist dimension which is of paramount importance. Despite an obvious criticism of their conservatism, the young writer praises Haitian women for their courage and doggedness. This is exemplified by the character of the grandmother who epitomizes Haitian resignation and wisdom when she admits that “We come from a place […] where in one instant, you can lose your father and all your other dreams” ( BEM 165). Yet, despite marked differences in time, setting and topic, the two works are far from being completely disconnected. In fact, they hinge on similar key concepts, such as the sense of place and the inevitability of emigration.

Within a month of the presentation of a Guyana Prize Special Award to Wilson Harris at a conference at the University of Warwick, another outstanding Caribbean novelist has been honoured. In like manner, Barbadian novelist George Lamming was made a Fellow of the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) during a conference in his honour at the University of the West Indies, Mona last week-end. The presentation to Lamming was made by another IOJ Fellow, Prof Rex Nettleford, Vice-Chancellor of UWI and authority on Caribbean cultural affairs. Both the honour and the conference were meant to express recognition of Lamming’s “sterling contributions to Caribbean peoples and the struggles against colonialism and defence of sovereignty.” Organizers of the conference, UWI (Mona), UWI’s Centre for Caribbean Thought and the Department of Africana Studies at Brown University of Georgia, USA paid tribute to the novelist as an “outstanding Caribbean literary icon.” The IOJ, located in Kingston, is a very important establishment known for its long association with literature, publishing and historical archives. Among its publications is one of the leading journals in the Caribbean, Jamaica Journal, which was once edited by poet and fiction writer Olive Senior. The newest IOJ Fellow has associations with UWI through his receipt of an Honorary Doctorate in 1980 and his period as Writer in Residence at Mona from 1967 to 1968.

In the Castle of My Skin Dialogues Notes Links Teaching ... Citations In the Castle of My Skin was written in 1970 by George Lamming. It is the story of G., an autobiographical character. The novel is also seen as the story of the Caribbean as well as the coming of age story of G. We start out on G.'s ninth birthday and are immediately thrown into the context of what it is like growing up as a native in the Caribbean without a father. Lamming takes us to school with G. and his friends where we see just how the colonizers treat the colonized. On page 39, the inspector comes to the boys' school and proclaims Barbados as "little England." The students cheer because that is the attitude the schoolteachers send to them. There is a scene where the boys are studying and discussing the bright pennies they received after inspection (52). This leads one to understand just how poor these natives are, to think that a penny is worth so much to them, they can't even think how they would spend it. Maybe money just isn't how they place value on things. In chapter four, Lamming changes the point of view. It is still third person limited, but he switches characters from G. to and Old Man and Old Woman who are still talking about what is happening in the village with the schoolmaster and the local bank. In this chapter we see a slower pace of life. It is far less "fun" than the boys' lives.

Africa In Exile The following article is the first in a series about African writers in exile. We will look both backwards and forwards, as the state of exile is hardly a new event in the lives of writers of African descent. But that, dear reader, is jumping the gun. We begin: Ngugi Wa Thiong'o: Exile And Resistance
    Bronwyn Mills
Since 1982, Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o has lived in exile in the United States. Probably best known for his novels about Kenya's struggle to throw off British colonial rule and to disgorge the bitter pill of neocolonialism his countrymen have subsequently had to swallow, he has had his own struggle with these forces. Beginning with his first novel, Weep Not Child (1964), through his fourth, Petals of Blood (1977) — which very clearly challenges "independent" Kenya's neocolonial regime — Ngugi wrote in English. However, in December of 1977, following the publication of Petals of Blood , Ngugi was arrested on vague, Kafkaesque charges and held without trial in Kenya's Kamiti Maximum Security Prison. At that point he began to write in his native Gikuyu, the language of the Mau Mau resistance movement. As he has said many times, this is one way to resist the cultural dominion of the West.

Lusophone African Women's Writing: A Brief Introduction by Tony Simoes da Silva Sara Pinto Coelho Out of Africa (1937). The nostalgia which imbues Dinesen's book, reflective also of a particularly complex relationship with the local Africans who lived on `her' lands, has no equivalent in the Portuguese context. Moreover, although it is possible to argue a similar case of neglect of women's writing in the context of both British and French colonies, the Portuguese situation merits closer investigation. Indeed, the fact is that to this day the number of African women writers working in Portuguese remains almost negligible, illustrating to great effect the unique condition of Portuguese colonialism. (1997) actually lists the names of a considerable number of women writers, especially poets, it is important to note that for the most part their production was merely incidental. Many wrote only the odd poem and little more. If it remains characteristic of Lusophone Africa that to have one's books published requires a great degree of luck and kow-towing to the right people, again the challenge is far greater for women than it is for men. Thus even such a well-known figure as Paulina Chiziane has had to resort to having her latest novel
