Born in the waning moments of 1949 and the opening minutes of 1950, Dominick Birdsey and his twin brother are physical mirror images of one and other. They grow into distinct yet connected entities. From childhood, Dominick fights for separation and wholeness in a house of fear. But Dominick's talent for survival comes at enormous personal cost. And it will be put to the ultimate test when his brother commits an unthinkable act that threatens the tenuous balance of both his and Dominick's life.

Wally Lamb brings new book to Co-op
Elizabeth Gilhuly Issue date: Section: Focus Last Thursday night, author and former UConn associate professor Wally Lamb spoke about his new book, "Couldn't Keep It To Myself: Testimonies from Our Imprisoned Sisters" at the UConn Co-op.
Along the promotional tour for this revolutionary book, Lamb has received mixed responses. Among these responses are that of a woman who told Lamb that he was bound for hell because he allowed his characters to use four-letter words.
Through this book Lamb hopes to shatter stereotypes of prison inmates, including how they tend to be characterized.
Lamb, accompanied by four of the women from his book, read excerpts from their respective sections. One of the women mentioned a motivation Lamb used in his class: "Show it, don't tell it!" Their self-exploration led them to want to share their stories so others may learn from these experiences.

'I Know This Much is True' by Wally Lamb
Fiction - paperback; Harper Torch/Regan Books; 894 pages; 2003 (originally published 1998)
This book is an epic family drama that is difficult to put down. It opens with Dominick Birdsey's twin brother, Thomas, committing an atrociously disturbing act in the Three Rivers, Connecticut Public Library. It is October 1990 and the act is a form of protest against the impending Gulf War. From here the reader is transported into a world of pain, longing, confusion and anger. By jumping backwards and forwards in time we learn of the Birdsey twins' upbringing, about their lives with a miserable, abusive step-father and their weak-willed defenseless mother. Intertwined in this narrative is another about the Birdsey's maternal grandfather, an Italian immigrant whose arrogance and misogynist ways richochet through the generations.
Much of the book centres on Dominick's fight to rescue the schizophrenic Thomas from a barbaric mental health institution. Throw in one doomed relationship with a floozy a decade younger than himself, a failed marriage, a cot death, a mother dying from cancer and a couple of horrendous accidents (in a car and off a ladder) sounds like a soap opera, doesn't it?

Author Info: Wally Lamb
It was Oprah's Book Club and the selection of Wally Lamb's prior novel, She's Come Undone , that catapulted him into the rank of mega-bestselling authors, but it's in this novel that he really achieves the apotheosis of Oprahfication. This encyclopedia sized (901 pages), fatalistic, disease-of-the-week compendium of every hot button issue that's ever been discussed on an afternoon talk show, is supposed to sum up the history of men in the past half century. What it really does is to make the female argument for what men should be like, which, of course, is that we should be more like women. The story is narrated by Dominick Birdsey, a school teacher, later a house painter, from Three Rivers, Connecticut. He and his twin brother Thomas were born on opposite sides of New Year's Eve in 1949. Their mother Concettina, besides being hare lipped, was the kind of powerless doormat of a woman who makes even a troglodyte like me thankful for feminism. No one will tell the boys who their real Father was, and their step-father, Ray, brutalized the whole family, verbally and physically. As the novel opens, Thomas, who is paranoid/schizophrenic, cuts off his hand in the local library as a kind of sacrificial propitiation to halt the coming Gulf War. He ends up institutionalized and Dominick works to get him released, having promised his dying mother that :

She's Come Undone
Wally Lamb
Dolores' first memories are from when she is about four years old. Her mother and father dominate her life. The early memories are the few good family memories she has. Life isn't easy for Dolores. By the time she is thirteen, she feels alienated from her family. Her one hero betrays her. She does poorly in social skills and can't get along in her parochial school. Dolores' mother feels guilty for the life Dolores has. She gives in to Dolores' cravings. Dolores caves into herself. In high school one counselor becomes Dolores' friend. He and her mother conspire against her to make her improve her life. Unfortunately, their solution adds to the problems Dolores has. By the time she is 40, Dolores has experienced most tragedies life can throw at her. Yet she endures. There is absolutely no way to describe the story line of this book without giving away important plot parts. She's Come Undone is a powerful, poignant book about a girl who manages to find herself - sort of. It's a quick, easy read. But it's not a book to be quickly forgotten. Dolores Price stays with you. This is an oft repeated comments about She's Come Undone , but I have to add my two cents anyway - is the author really a man? It amazes me a man can understand the female psyche so well. Often I was empathizing with Dolores as she narrated the novel. I knew some of people she had in her life, just under a different name. I understood what she was feeling. I know the feelings of betrayal, fear, uncertainty, tentative happiness, and love she experiences. This is a good book for book club discussions. It's an excellent book to read.
