Support this site! Dominick Birdsey has had quite a life. He has spent most of it invisibly attached to his identical twin brother, Thomas. As children, Dominick and Thomas lived with their mother Concettina, and stepfather, Ray. They did not know their father. Their mother wouldn't tell them who he was. Ray was very abusive and Concettina took it all as thought she deserved it. Thomas took the brunt of the twins' abuse because he was more sensitive and effeminate. Ray didn't like that and did awful things to make Thomas more of a man. While in college, Dominick noticed that Thomas acted strange sometimes. Thomas continued to fall apart until it was revealed that he was schizophrenic. Now, Dominick was the "normal" twin. Through adulthood, he continued to visit Thomas in hospitals and special homes. Dominick's adult life has been a difficult one. He lives with the guilt of being healthy, while Thomas is nuts. Dominick gets married, loses a child to SIDS and then loses his wife. Their marriage just can't survive such stress. Dominick's closed frame of mind doesn't help the situation.

Writing teacher Wally Lamb's first novel, "She's Come Undone", came out in hard cover in 1992. But the tale of fat, self-loathing Dolores Price really became a phenomenon five years later when talk-show diva Oprah Winfrey picked the just-published paperback edition for her on-air book club. The reaction disproved again the culturally elitist theory that daytime-television watchers don't read. The experience turned Lamb into a cash cow, albeit at the expense of his writing. His meandering sophomore effort, "I Know This Much Is True," is 900 pages longer than the "Odyssey", a bit shorter than "War and Peace". The length, combined with the vast sweep of the book's plot, voices, time-periods, locations, and themes, suggest this story of a horrendously dysfunctional Italian-American family was meant to be an epic in the classic sense. But the uneven writing - which ranges from the hilarious to the horrific to the hopelessly banal - guarantees this won't be one for posterity. That shouldn't matter to celebrity publisher Judith Regan, because the new book already has topped the best-seller lists and lo and behold has received Oprah's blessing. Still, Regan ranks a mere third in Lamb's lengthy acknowledgments. His agent and the agent's associate lead the list, suggesting the author has been shown the money once and is expecting to see it again.

This well-crafted, character-driven novel maintains that edgy discomfort throughout. This isn't escapist fiction; it's better, drawing the reader into a convoluted web of twins, fatherhood, love and mental instability, and then demanding emotional involvement. The story revolves around Dominick Birdsey, the sane twin responsible for his schizophrenic brother Thomas. Lamb creates Dominick with such complexity and so much baggage that he's not entirely easy to like. I could sympathize with his challenges, but the character's incredible resentment over his deathbed promise to his mother and her favoritism toward his weaker twin causes irrational outbursts and basically stupid actions. The novel focuses on the 40-year-old twins, Dominick's quest to have his brother released from a full-security mental hospital, and their current relationships with their stepfather, Ray. The plot, revealed through flashbacks, therapy sessions and their grandfather's egocentric autobiography, incorporates five generations into a revealing family portrait, layered with abuse and varying degrees of mental instability. The similarities between Dominick's life and that of his grandfather Domenico are startling and at times sickening, but always compelling. I Know This Much Is True , Lamb's second novel, is developed with such intricacies, it would be tempting to write a literary analysis about the repetitive mistakes among the generations, the names Tempesta and Prosperine, or the motifs of twins and monkeys.

A review of She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb A severely overweight child overcomes many tragedies and rigors in her life as she grows up. Reviewed by: Michael J. Griffin About Michael J. Griffin The thought that kept echoing through my head after I finished this book was "A man really wrote this?" I found my female friends who had read it had the same sentiments. Lamb is able to plumb the female psyche as well as any woman, and it shows in this novel about Dolores Price, a young woman who has uncontrollable appetites for many things. The first thing is food, to help her escape the reality of her abusive father who cheats on her mother every chance he gets, and her mother is a weak-spined person who keeps bringing in horrible choices of men. While I was reading this, I kept looking for the bright side of the story, but Price just has tribulation after tribulation that would have Job clucking in sympathy. But like someone driving past a bad car accident, morbid curiosity kept my interest. That and Lamb has Price's voice as one who is a sympathetic character, despite her myriad flaws, and she has a brave front of humor that allows people to look past a lot of other things. The book chronicles Price's life through high school and college, where she meets an assortment of motley characters and while the book has a somewhat hokey ending, it still ends well, and I admit to becoming, as Mike Myers' character on Saturday Night Live's Coffee Talk sketch, a little farklempt.
