Z Charles Lamb Biography Charles Lamb (1775- 27 July 1834) was an English essayist, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, which he produced along with his sister, Mary Lamb.
Charles Lamb was the youngest child of John Lamb, a lawyer's clerk. He was born in the Inner Temple and spent his youth there, later going away to school at Christ's Hospital. There he formed a friendship with Samuel Taylor Coleridge which would last for many years. After leaving school in 1789, he went to work for the South Sea House, whose subsequent downfall in a pyramid scheme after Lamb left would be contrasted to the company's prosperity in the first Elia essay. In 1792 he went to work for British East India Company, the death of his father's employer having ruined the family's fortunes. Charles and his sister Mary both suffered periods of mental illness, and Charles spent six weeks in an psychiatric hospital during 1795. He was, however, already making his name as a poet.
In 1799, John Lamb died and Charles became guardian to Mary, whose mental instability prevented her from looking after herself. Lamb continued to work as a clerk for the East India Company and doubled as a writer in various genres, his tragedy, John Woodvil, being published in 1802. His farce, Mr H, was performed at Drury Lane in 1807. In the same year, Tales from Shakespeare (Charles handled the tragedies and Mary the comedies) was published, and became a best-seller for William Godwin's "Children's Library".

A read may well be an antidote to a bad day at the office. I was at a school desk myself when I first read the memorable line- I had grown to my desk, as it were; and the wood had entered into my soul Michael Hennigan, Managing Editor Finfacts. O'KEEFE. IF peradventure, Reader, it has been thy lot to waste the golden years of thy life thy shining youth in the irksome confinement of an office; to have thy prison days prolonged through middle age down to decrepitude and silver hairs, without hope of release or respite; to have lived to forget that there are such things as holidays, or to remember them but as the prerogatives of childhood; then, and then only, will you be able to appreciate my deliverance. It is now six and thirty years since I took my seat at the desk in Mincing-lane. Melancholy was the transition at fourteen from the abundant play-time, and the frequently-intervening vacations of school days, to the eight, nine, and sometimes ten hours' a-day attendance at a counting-house. But time partially reconciles us to anything. I gradually became content doggedly contented, as wild animals in cages.

Amazon's Kindle

I wanted to share my thoughts on my new Amazon Kindle . (If you don't know what Kindle is, follow the link for some marketing literature on Amazon's pages.)
Amazon has a pretty good content catalog at the moment (not all Amazon titles are available) and you can also get a handful of magazines, newspapers, and blogs. If you subscribe to (e.g.) a newspaper, it will download automatically to your Kindle daily (push, rather than pull). As a bonus, even though a hardcopy book may only be available in hardcover is nevertheless discounted if you buy it in the Kindle electronic format.
Content can also be transferred directly (via USB) or emailed (for a small fee) to the device. So if you have a pile of docs sitting in your "to read" pile, it's easy enough to load them from your computer (the Kindle shows up as a USB disk drive). As has been pointed out in several other places, it is surprising that PDFs are not directly supported. Amazon has a conversion service where you can email the docs (.doc, .txt, .html, etc.) to your Kindle and they'll convert them to be Kindle-readable. If you want to convert a document yourself, then you have to use other tools (like Mobipocket Creator ). I have had mixed results with putting documents on the Kindle. For example, the Amazon

A FAREWELL TO TOBACCO
MAY the Babylonish curse
Strait confound my stammering verse,
If I can a passage see
In this word perplexity,
Or a fit expression find, Or a language to my mind (Still the phrase is wide or scant), To take leave of thee, Great Plant! Or in any terms relate Half my love, or half my hate; For I hate, yet love thee so, That, whichever thing I show, The plain truth will seem to be A constrained hyperbole, And the passion to proceed More for a mistress than a weed. Sooty retainer to the vine, Bacchus' black servant, negro fine; Sorcerer, that mak'st us dote upon Thy begrimed complexion, And, for thy pernicious sake, More and greater oaths to break Than reclaimed lovers take 'Gainst women: thou thy siege dost lay Much too in the female way, While thou suck'st the laboring breath Faster than kisses or than death. Thou in such a cloud dost bind us That our worst foes cannot find us, And ill fortune, that would thwart us, Shoots at rovers, shooting at us

    Mary and Charles Lamb
This is a story I copied from the book "Little Journeys - Famous Women" written by Elbert Hubbard, copywrited 1897, published by The Knickerbocker Press, New York
In this moving chapter you will find reference to the following names:
Coleridge, Lovell, Salt, Southey, Fricker, Godwin, Cowden-Clarke, Moxon, DeQuincey, Reynolds,Isola, Manning, Hazlitt, Novello, Jeffries.
This book makes no reference as to the accruacy of the material and I only print this because I feel it is a very interesting story about a brother and sister in early times. Enjoy!
I sing the love of brother and sister. For he who tells the tale of Charles and Mary Lamb's life must tell of a love that was an uplift to this brother and sister in childhood, that sustained them in the desolation of disaster, and was a saving solace even when every hope seemed gone and reason veiled her face. This love caused the flowers of springtime to bloom for them again and again, and attracted such a circle of admirers, that as we read the records of their lives, set forth in the letters they received and wrote, we forget poverty, forget calamity, and behold only the radiant, smiling faces of loving, trusting, trustful friends. The mother of Charles and Mary Lamb was a woman of fine natural endowment, of spirit, and aspiration. She married a man much older than herself. We know little of his habits, less of his ambitions, nothing of his ancestry. Neither do we care to. He was not good enough to attract, nor bad enough to be interesting. He called himself a scrivener, but in fact he was a valet. He was neutral salts; and I say this just after having read his son's amiable mention of him under the guise of "Lovel," and with full knowledge that "he danced well, was a good judge of vintage, played the harpsichord, and recited poetry on occasion."
