A laugh is worth a hundred groans in any market.
Laughter

A miser is sometimes a grand personification of fear. He has a fine horror of poverty; and he is not content to keep want from the door, or at arm's length, but he places it, by heaping wealth upon wealth, at a sublime distance! Misers A poor relation is the most irrelevant thing in nature. Poverty A side intelligencer. Ears Antiquity! thou wondrous charm, what art thou? that, being nothing, art everything! When thou wert, thou wert not antiquity, then thou wert nothing, but hadst a remoter antiquity, as thou calledst it to look back to with blind veneration; thou thyself being to thyself flat, jejune, modern! What mystery lurks in this retroversion? or what half Januses are we, that cannot look forward with the same idolatry with which we forever revert! The mighty future is as nothing, being everything! The past is everything, being nothing! Antiquity Be not frightened at the hard words "imposition," "imposture;" give and ask no questions. Cast thy bread upon the waters. Some have, unawares, entertained angels.

The pub is extremely well-maintained and decorated in an understated yet eclectic manner, complete with the odd, aged map and signs asking patrons not to feed Mascha - the well-behaved pub dog.
Food is excellent. Bar snacks include homemade sausage rolls, pasties and Scotch eggs. More substantial fare is offered on the daily-changing menu which offers a good selection of clean-tasting and hearty modern-British/European dishes. The prices are reasonable for Islington too.
As others have said, this is a truly great pub ... now leave me to it and try and find a great pub of your own.

    Notes on Life and Works
Born February 10, 1775, in London and educated at Christ's Hospital, Charles Lamb was a minor poet (and friend of S. T. Coleridge), but also the earliest editor of Elizabethan drama, and the greatest essay-writer of his age. He first took a job at South Sea House and from 1792 to his retirement in 1825 at East India House. Without much of an inheritance, Charles lived with his sister Mary Lamb throughout his life. They were true collaborators and co-dependents, each subject to periods of mental illness, each nursing the other during these times. Mary Lamb, while insane, in 1796 had knifed to death their their mother. It was owing to Charles' love that she was de-institutionalized and allowed to go home. They earned their living by writing, co-authoring

Leigh Hunt's London journal , 17 October 1835 (Edmund Blunden, Charles Lamb: His Life Recorded by his Contemporaries (1934), p. 246). In December Wordsworth was in town, and as Keats wished to know him I made up a party to dinner of Charles Lamb, Wordsworth, Keats, and Monkhouse, his friend; and a very pleasant party we had.... On December 28th the immortal dinner came off in my painting-room, with Jerusalem He then, in a strain of humour beyond description, abused me for putting Newton's head into my picture; `a fellow', said he, `who believed nothing unless it was as clear as the three sides of a triangle.' And then he and Keats agreed he had destroyed all the poetry of the rainbow by reducing it to the prismatic colours. It was impossible to resist him, and we all drank `Newton's health and confusion to mathematics'. It was delightful to see the good humour of Wordsworth in giving in to all our frolics without affectation and laughing as heartily as the best of us. By this time other friends joined, among them
