In a letter dated September 25, 1918, he reported that in the previous three days he had received 35 letters from 22 different people. During the war, censors sometimes chastised Lamb for being indiscreet, but once the Armistice was signed, his honest descriptions of postwar devastation-he once saw starving citizens reduced to eating horseswere no longer subject to review. The legal neighbourhood into which Charles Lamb was born , made a great impression on the young boy. "I was born, and passed the first seven years of my life, in the Temple. Its church, its halls, its gardens, its fountain, its river, I had almost said for in those young years, what was this king of rivers to me but a stream that watered our pleasant places? ... it is the most elegant spot in the metropolis. What a transition for a countryman visiting London for the first time the passing from the crowded Strand or Fleet-street, by unexpected avenues, into its magnificent ample squares, its classic green recesses! ... a man would give something to have been born in such places. What a collegiate aspect has that fine Elizabethan hall, where the fountain plays ... What an antique air had the now almost effaced sun-dials, with their moral inscriptions, seeming coevals with that Time which they measured, and to take their revelations of its flight immediately from heaven, holding correspondence with the fountain of light! How would the dark line steal imperceptibly on, watched by the eye of childhood, eager to detect its movement, never catched, nice as an evanescent cloud or the first arrests of sleep!" Charles' father was John Lamb (1738-1799). John Lamb was a clerk to a London lawyer, Samuel Salt.
