The Nameless: Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake
[My recent computer problems fried laptop led me to pull out some archive CDs. On one I came across an essay I wrote in November that I thought I'd lost. Since I doubt that many magazines will still be interested in it, I thought I would put it on the blog today.]
A Novel of Names for a Community Without a Name
Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake
(Originally written in November, 2003)
I was captivated by this novel in large part because of the uncanny sense of identification I felt with Lahiri’s protagonist, Gogol Ganguli. I also think it raises a number of interesting issues regarding names: misnaming, renaming, and the epistemological problem of namelessness.
The Nameless: ABCD, South Asian American... This is a novel that represents – perhaps definitively – the experiences of a very specific community. But which community? Unfortunately, the community to which I refer has no name that is not clunkily sociological or somehow pejorative. Sociologically, they are second-generation South Asian immigrants, or South Asian Americans. By people within, and recently from, South Asia, they are called, pejoratively, ABCD’s (American Born Confused Desis). And while in recent years “ABCD” has lost its edge of mockery, and gained a measure of academic respect, it is still inadequately descriptive – something of a joke even if conference papers and a

In early 2001, Lahiri married Alberto Vourvoulias Bush, a journalist with Time magazine, in a traditional Bengali wedding ceremony in Kolkata (or Calcutta). A little more than a year later, the couple had their first child, a son. And shortly after that, Lahiri received a Guggenheim fellowship and completed work on her fine first novel, The Namesake , which is being released this month. So maybe it's no surprise that Lahiri says winning the Pulitzer has had no real impact on her. "It doesn't affect what I do," she says during a call to her home in New York. "It doesn't really affect how I work." She says she continues to maintain her long-time practice of writing in the mornings. "Having recently had a child has made things a little more challenging," she says. "But things are working out pretty well and my life has moved smoothly into this new phase of motherhood." In conversation, Lahiri is poised, friendly, self-deprecating and slightly reserved. "I'm not a very good close reader of my own work," she demurs when asked to explain the meaning of an incident near the end of

'The Interpreter of Maladies' by Jhumpa Lahiri Jhumpa Lahiri's first book, this collection of stories set in India and the United States won her the prestigious Pullitzer Prize in 2000. The Interpreter of Maladies focuses on Indians in exile, cut off from what they hold familiar and sent forth into a world of new experience, and the places where old and new Indian cultures meet. In the first story, 'A Temporary Matter', a daily powercut tests the fragile relationship of Shukumar and Shoba, a couple who have recently lost a child through miscarriage. The hour of enforced darkness for five consecutive nights begins to bring them closer. In the title story an Indian tour guide encounters the clash of values and expectations of a wealthy American-Indian wife, revisiting her homeland with her husband and children. These are skilfully written stories, evocative of place as much as of all the unspoken tensions and desires of human relationships. If you enjoy this book, you could also try Lahiri's novel

Houghton Mifflin Co Literary Fiction ISBN: 039592720X Read an excerpt Reading Group Guide Receiving the Pulitzer Prize, according to first-time author Jhumpa Lahiri, was a complete surprise. However, to anyone who has read these meticulously crafted short stories, it's no surprise at all. INTERPRETER OF MALADIES, lovely from the cover on in, is redolent of India itself. Teeming with all manner of humanity, it is in turn frank and subtle, bold and understated. There is an immediacy to Lahiri's style that bridges any gulfs between the more structured traditions of Indian culture and the brashness of American life. This debut collection opens with "A Temporary Matter," a sharply poignant tale in which the sheltering darkness of a Boston electrical outage encourages newfound intimacy in a grieving couple. Going from the intensely personal to the political, the next story deals with a young girl's perceptions of far-off Pakistan as its civil war bombards her home via television in "When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine." "What I remember during those twelve days of the war was that my father no longer asked me to watch the news with them, and that Mr. Pirzada stopped bringing me candy, and that my mother refused to serve anything other than boiled eggs with rice for dinner. I remember some nights helping my mother spread a sheet and blankets on the couch so that Mr. Pirzada could sleep there, and high-pitched voices hollering in the middle of the night when my parents called our relatives in Calcutta to learn more details about the situation. Most of all I remember the three of them operating during that time as if they were a single person, sharing a single meal, a single body, a single silence, and a single fear."

    The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
Jhumpa Lahiri was born in London of Bengali Parents, and grew up in Rhode Island, USA. She is an accomplished writer and winner of the Pulitzer prize in 2000. Anyone and everyone who has read the story will agree that she is indeed a master story-teller!!! The book deals with the trials and tribulations of an Indian Bengali couple who migrate very soon in their married life to the US of A . How their kids grow up confused. they are being sent to American schools, taught American History and yet, they know that they are not natives of the country. The best part about the book is the intricacies with which she has explained the small, otherwise trivial things about life of an Indian in America. How, they try their best to maintain the culture that they have carried in from India. How they desperately want their kids to appreciate the culture and traditions, they do not understand, and feel no connect to. How the kids grow up hating everything that has anything to do with their being Indian. How they keep reminding themselves, that they are Americans really and have only a faint remote connection to India. How they are lost, coz they no longer feel the connection to their relatives on the visits to India and are aching to come back, to the place they belong. At the same time, they are not completely accepted in the American society. They may sit and eat with them, dress like them, but never will they be, THEM!

A moment with ... Jhumpa Lahiri, Pulitzer Prize-winning author
By PRIYANKA JOSHI SPECIAL TO THE P-I Jhumpa Lahiri is tall by Indian standards, at 5-feet-7 or so, and her young, line-less visage has skin that could pass her as Italian or Latina or from anywhere else in the world where the sun shines happily every day. Lahiri has translated this "being-from-many-places" quality to worldwide applause in her Pulitzer Prize-winning debut book of short stories, "The Interpreter of Maladies," and the more recent novel, "The Namesake," made into a feature film by acclaimed Indian director Mira Nair. Patrons of the Seattle Public Library's "Seattle Reads" series have been reading "The Namesake" and it was on this invitation that Lahiri visited Seattle this week. She speaks at Town Hall Tuesday at 7 p.m. On what her compassionate eye for portraying people and situations would like to see First World countries develop as a way to better lead the world: I suppose the same lack of judgment and tolerance towards our differences is extremely important for us to evolve. I think there are a lot of misconceptions on both sides, the developing vs. the developed world, especially about America. I've felt the frustration in my lack of belonging to any one place, but I've also felt it liberating to be able to appreciate something without feeling disloyal to my own culture. Many people cannot feel that because they're stemming from a certain sense of rootedness. I certainly noticed my parents' strong link to India, which I didn't and I questioned a lot of things. This also helped me in my interaction with Mira Nair, who I think is tremendous.

The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
Ashima and Ashoke Ganguli are recent immigrants to Boston from India in 1968 when they give birth to their first child, a son. Their son ends up with the pet name of Gogul, when his "good name" never arrives from India. Gogul despises his name and grows up as American as he can while his parents cling to their Bengali past while living what appears to be a typical American suburban lifestyle. Jhumpa Lahiri (winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Interpreter of Maladies ) has written a novel about immigrant lives, families, and bonds that can never be broken. The Namesake has received high praise from most reviewers. Michiko Kakutani begins her review for the New York Times, "Jhumpa Lahiri's quietly dazzling new novel, The Namesake , is that rare thing: an intimate, closely observed family portrait that effortlessly and discreetly unfolds to disclose a capacious social vision."
