(CNN) He is born in Boston. His parents are Indian immigrants. He is named for a Russian writer. He seeks his fortune in the ultimate melting pot, New York City. Is it any wonder that Gogol Ganguli, the protagonist of Jhumpa Lahiri's new novel, "The Namesake" (Houghton Mifflin), spends the book stumbling among cultures, trying to figure out who he is? Lahiri, who won the Pulitzer Prize for her 1999 volume of short stories, "Interpreter of Maladies," is attracted to the issues of culture clash and assimilation, particularly involving Indians and Americans, and can relate to the issues faced by Gogol. Her background she was born in London, England, grew up in Rhode Island, went to school in New York and Massachusetts and now lives in Brooklyn has informed her work. Indeed, she looks at her immigrant parents and senses they have a rootedness in Indian and Bengali culture missing from her own life.

Book Review: Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Namesake"
Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Namesake" (2004)
Fitz E. Barringer
The first word of Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake isn’t a word at all. It is a date. 1968, to be exact. But in many ways it is fitting that the opening line of Lahiri’s captivating novel takes the reader back in time, for much of the story is an examination of the tension between past and present. And it is that tension between what was and what is – never far from Lahiri’s or the reader’s mind – that drives the narration, colors the drama, and shapes the lives of the novel’s characters. The Namesake begins by recounting the emotional struggles of an Indian husband and wife trying to make a new life in America. Ashima Ganguli, the pregnant wife, wrestles with an intense longing to be with her family and to share the experience of childbirth with her mother and father. Ashima’s husband, Ashoke, meanwhile, wants to provide a better life for his new son by earning a doctorate degree from a prestigious American university. While both characters want to build a better life in America, however, their pasts play a strong role in who they are and what they will become. Ashima’s love of family, for instance, influences her to create a close-knit web of immigrant friends. This group practices Indian customs, speaks the Bengali language, and, in many respects, becomes a substitute family for the vast collection of relatives back in India. But for Ashima, the close relations between the immigrants become an excuse to avoid the customs of American life. Ashima is reluctant to learn to drive, she insists on wearing Indian clothing and eating Indian food, and for many years she lives without American friends. To a large degree, her life is consumed by recreating Indian culture in America.

With a compelling, universal fluency, Lahiri portrays the practical and emotional adversities of her diverse characters in elegant and direct prose. Whether describing hardships of a lonely Indian wife adapting to life in the United States or illuminating the secret pain of a young couple as they discuss their betrayals during a series of electrical blackouts, Lahiri's bittersweet stories avoid sentimentality without abandoning compassion.

Jhumpa Lahiri writer Born: Birthplace: London, England Lahiri grew up in Rhode Island, the daughter of parents who emigrated from India. She graduated from Boston University with graduate degrees in English, creative writing, and comparative literature. While completing her Ph.D. in renaissance studies, Lahiri realized her desire to write eclipsed her ambitions to be a scholar. A major fellowship to the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown proved life changing, and helped her to secure an agent, a book deal, and her first published story in The New Yorker . In 2000, Lahiri became the youngest recipient in the history of the Pulitzer Prizes to receive the award in fiction for her first collection of stories, Interpreter of Maladies (1999). Review of Interpreter Of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri
Were Jhumpa Lahiri in a writing group I ran I would tell her the stories that comprise Interpreter Of Maladies Too often Lahiri’s tales work on just one or two levels, tops. And she is not such a poetic prose stylist that that lack of depth is compensated for by her spellbinding eye’s insights. A Temporary Matter , the first tale, has moments, but is too long. It is about the dissolution of a marriage, which comes to a head during a series of enforced blackouts on their block, and there are enough universal touchstones that the couple’s ethnicity is not an issue. But, there is too much listing of foodstuffs and over description that the 22 page tale could be cut by two thirds, and be much better for the denser prose and heightened descriptions. When Mr. Pirzada Came To Dine is also a solid tale, but with a weak end. It follows the travails of a Bengali man who dines at the house of a family in America, during the Pakistan-India war of the early 1970s, the independence of Bangladesh, and the memories of a little girl who relates them. Yet, even this passable tale Lahiri’s overdescription kills. Here’s Mr. Pirzada’s reaction to news coverage of the war: ‘ As he watched he had an immovable expression on his face, composed but alert, as if someone were giving him directions to an unknown destination.

Usually I occupied myself with a book, but that night my father insisted that I pay attention. Jhumpa Lahiri For that story, I took as my subject a young woman whom I got to know over the course of a couple of visits. I never saw her having any health problems - but I knew she wanted to be married. Jhumpa Lahiri For years, I sort of would try to write a story that somehow fit the title. And I don't think it happened for maybe another four years that I actually thought of a story, the plot of a story that corresponded to that phrase. Jhumpa Lahiri He told me he was working as an interpreter in a doctor's office in Brookline, Massachusetts, where I was living at the time, and he was translating for a doctor who had a number of Russian patients.
