Review:
The Namesake ... The Namesake Get this Book!
Q) In your first book, Interpreter of Maladies , some of the stories are set in India, others in the United States. The Namesake is set predominantly in the United States. Can you talk a bit about the significance of setting in your work? A)
The Namesake is, essentially, a story about life in the United States, so the American setting was always a given. The terrain is very much the terrain of my own life - New England and New York, with Calcutta always hovering in the background. Now that the writing is done I've realized that America is a real presence in the book; the characters must struggle and come to terms with what it means to live here, to be brought up here, to belong and not belong here. Q) The Namesake deals with Indian immigrants in the United States as well as their children. What, in your opinion, distinguishes the experiences of the former from the latter?

Interview with Jhumpa Lahiri
interviewed by Arun Aguiar
Jhumpa Lahiri, 32, was born to Bengali Indian parents in London, moved to Rhode Island before she could say her first haw haw , often vacationed in Calcutta during her youth, and now lives on the border of Greenwich Village. After graduating from Barnard, she attended Boston University's creative writing program and obtained a Ph.D. in Renaissance Studies. A two-year fellowship at Provincetown's Fine Arts Work Center followed. The muse of writing first visited Lahiri in primary school and, at the ripe old age of seven, she began co-authoring "books" with a classroom friend during recess. Interpreter of Maladies , her first collection of 9 short stories, was published in June.

Sanjeev felt knots forming at the back of his neck. He felt dizzy. He needed to lie down. He walked toward the bedroom, but stopped short when he saw Twinkle's shoes facing him in the doorway. He thought of her slipping them on her feet. But instead of feeling irritated, as he had ever since they moved into the house together, he felt a pang of anticipation at the thought of her rushing unsteadily down the winding staircase in them, scratching the floor a bit in her path. The pang intensified as he thought of her running to the bathroom to brighten her lipstick, and eventually rushing to get people their coats, and finally rushing to the cherry-wood table when the last guest had left, to begin opening their housewarming presents. It was the same pang he used to feel before they were married, when he would hang up the phone after one of their conversations, or when he would drive back from the airport, wondering which ascending plane in the sky was hers.

Another of our conversations with winners of this year's Pulitzer prizes in the arts, and once again, to Elizabeth Farnsworth. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The fiction winner this year was Jhumpa Lahiri for her collection of short stories, "Interpreter of Maladies." Using a variety of characters, Lahiri gives life in these stories to the feelings of alienation, loneliness, and hope that so often mark the immigrant experience. She was born in England in 1967 and raised in Rhode Island. Her parents were born and raised in India. "Interpreter of maladies" is her first book, and the title story also won an O. Henry award. Thank you for being with us, and congratulations. JHUMPA LAHIRI, Pulitzer Prize, Fiction: Thank you.

If, on the other hand, you are like me, then you may find yourself, after the first ten minutes, reading on for 20, then 30, gobbling up one tale after the next, eventually looking up and realizing that a good portion of your day has passed. When I discovered this book, my own days were, much like these stories, intensely brief and full. I had recently given birth to my daughter, was caring for my two-year-old son, and scarcely had the opportunity to comb my hair in the mornings, never mind sit down with a book and a cup of tea. I had seen you before, too many times to count, but a farewell that my family threw for yours, at our house in Inman Square, is when I begin to recall your presence in my life. Your parents had decided to leave Cambridge, not for Atlanta or Arizona, as some other Bengalis had, but to move all the way back to India, abandoning the struggle that my parents and their friends had embarked upon. It was 1974. I was six years old. You were nine. What I remember most clearly are the hours before the party, which my mother spent preparing for everyone to arrive: the furniture was polished, the paper plates and napkins set out on the table, the rooms filled with the smell of lamb curry and pullao Good Housekeeping Page of Print E-Mail Feeds

    Jhumpa Lahiri wins Pulitzer
Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies has been awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The Bengali novelist is perhaps the first Indian to win the prestigious US prize. Also in the final fray were Ha Jin's Waiting and Annie Proulx's Close Range: Wyoming Stories. (Scribner). The 84th annual awards were announced by the Pulitzer Prize board at Columbia University in New York on Monday. Lahiri was born in 1967 in London, and grew up in Rhode Island. She has travelled several times to India. Both her parents were born and raised in that country. Her father is a librarian and mother a teacher. Three of the stories in the award winning book were published in the New Yorker which has recently named her as 'one of the 20 best writers under the age of 40.' The book appeared last year. Her title story has been selected for the O Henry award for the best American short stories. She was a recipient of the Transatlantic Review award from Henfield Foundation and fiction prize from the Louisville Review
