She was born in M¥rbacka. From 1885 to 1895, she taught school in Landskrona. Her first two books— The Story of G¶sta Berling (2 volumes, 1891; trans. 1898), a retelling of V¤rmland folktales in a lyric prose that shows the influence of the Scottish writer Thomas Carlyle, and Invisible Links (1894; trans. 1899), a collection of stories—established her reputation. After 1895 she made writing her sole career. Her works are based on Swedish folktales and are characterized by naturalness and freshness.
