The Girl from the Marsh Croft by Selma Lagerlof About this title: When I see a stream like this in the wilderness, he thought, "I am reminded of my own life. As persistent as this stream have I been in forcing my way past all that has obstructed my path. Father has been my rock ahead, and mother tried to hold me back and bury me between moss-tufts, but I stole past both of them and got out in the world. Hay-ho, hi, hi! I think mother is still sitting at home and weeping for me. But what do I care! She might have known that I should amount to something some day, instead of trying to oppose me!" Note: This is a general synopsis. Each listing is further described below.

She is best remembered for the meaning and depth she gave to materials of folk origin. Gosta Berling's Saga (1891), her first novel, is her most admired book. It is a fantastic romance in loosely related episodes that deal with a swashbuckling defrocked minister and his fellow adventurers. Like much of Lagerlof's fiction, the book is set in Varmland, the province in west-central Sweden where Lagerlof was born.

However the one known as Selma Lagerlof may have well been one of the most influential authors of all time. She was a teacher, an influential author, and the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature. In fact her name is a household item in Sweden to this day. Selma Lagerlof was not only the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for writing, but also an inspiration to all aspiring authors. Her works are things that many Swedish take pride in. Through these she taught about her life, as well as the culture around her. Maybe though the best thing that Lagerlof has taught us is to follow our dreams.
