In 1895 financial support from the royal family and the Swedish Academy encouraged her to abandon teaching altogether. She travelled in Italy and wrote Antikris mirakler (1897) [ The Miracles of Antichrist ], a novel set in Sicily. After several minor works she published Jerusalem The Holy City ], a novel about Swedish peasants who emigrated to the Holy Land and whom she had visited in 1900. This work was her first immediate success. Selma naci³ en una oscura noche de noviembre, en Marb¥cka, la antigua casa solariega del matrimonio compuesto por Erik Gustaf Lagerl¶f y Elisabet Lovisa Lagerl¶f, ( de soltera Wallroth ); ella perteneciente una acomodada familia de comerciantes de Filipstad. Ambas familias ten­an antiguas ra­ces en la regi³n de V¤rmland. El matrimonio se realiz³ en 1849. Como era habitual, sus abuelos Daniel Lagerl¶f y Elisabet Maria vivieron en la casa solariega hasta su muerte ocurrida en 1852 y 1864, respectivamente. Fue la penºltima de cinco hermanos: Anna, Daniel, Johan, Selma y Gerda (su m¡s cercana). Muchos de sus ancestros hab­an sido sacerdotes o militares, y este era el caso de su padre, un teniente escribiente del Regimiento de V¤rmland y propietario rural. Dotado de una chispeante personalidad, era una persona estimada por sus vecinos. Los primeros a±os de la familia fueron de bonanza, a pesar de las carencias del padre en la administraci³n de M¥rbacka, lo que hizo que a los pocos a±os el bienestar de la familia se fuera degradando. Unos a±os antes de morir, Erik Gustav se volvi³ alcoh³lico, lo que empeor³ la situaci³n familiar.

She was a close friend to Sophie Elkan, and the preserved letters from their correspondence make it hard to believe that this relationship was anything else than homosexual.
She lived in Sunne, where two hotels are named after her.
