REFERENCES COLUMNS Fantasy Horror General Fiction 'Phoenix and Ashes' is essentially the story of Cinderella. Retold against the background of World War I, Lackey adds a strong dose of magic as a means to spin this simple fairytale into a four hundred-page novel. Mercedes Lackey is not the first author to have thought of retelling a classic fairytale, but the elements needed to turn this story into a compelling novel for adults are sadly lacking. The setting is inadequately drawn and the novel's language lacks richness. The result is a book that is not without entertainment value, but one that falls far short of the standards set by some contemporary masters of the fantasy genre. In her portrayal of English society in the late 1910s, Lackey creates no feeling of authenticity. She is quick to allude to social snobbery and the changes that war was beginning to force upon society, but once again real feeling and detail are absent. Lackey's task is not aided by her linguistic style. She throws in the odd word or phrase meant to be indicative of the stereotypical English aristocracy, but her language is that of twenty-first-century America. 'Gotten' is not a word that is current in the English language either now or at the beginning of the last century.

Yet sixty years later, the world still suffers from war, greed and madness. Worse, man's nadir of systematic cruelty returns with bizarre new weapons. The metahumans of Earth must find a way to defeat this powerful foe and discover what lurks behind the scenes - a secret world hidden from our own. Mercedes Lackey, one of fantasy's most beloved voices, and new talent Steve Libbey bring you a podcast series that catapults the classic superhero into the 21st century.
Book One: Invasion starts the series off with a bang - a set of coordinated attacks by Nazi warriors in futuristic battle armor. We meet our cast of heroes in the midst of chaos: Belladonna Blue, a young azure-skinned healer; Victoria Victrix Nagy, a geomancer fighting panic attacks; Handsome Devil, whose luck is metahumanly good; Red Saviour, strident leader of an anachronistic Soviet team; Red Djinni, the shapeshifting criminal; and John Murdock, a fugitive super-soldier. Watching over them all is the Seraphym, descended from the Infinite to protect humanity.

Mercedes Lackey If there are going to be people out there making war on other people, don't you think it's a good idea for some of those people to at least follow a code of ethics? Not 'honor' but something you can pin down and be sure of, something with the same rules for everybody. Mercedes Lackey It makes sense for people who are good at fighting to go out and do it-because if they're good at it, that means the fewest number of other people die. Mercedes Lackey, Eric Flint and Dave Freer: This Rough Magic (2003)
Published: Baen, 2003
It took me a long time - around two hundred and fifty pages of reading - to get into This Rough Magic , and yet I ended up enjoying it immensely. I picked this up in the local library, without looking at it too closely, and didn't even realise that it is the second in a series.
The central part of the plot is about a (fictional) siege of citadel on the island of Corfu in 1539, when it was held by the Venetians. The Hungarians, led by the evil King Emeric and manipulated by the Grand Duke Jagellion of Lithuania who is a demon in human flesh, carry out the attack in alliance with the Byzantines. The Corfu garrison has been regarded as something of a backwater by the Venetians, despite the island's strategic position (controlling entrance to the Adriatic). Among those trapped in the citadel are the main characters, including the wild young Venetian Benito Valdosta who is the hero of This Rough Magic
The last paragraph makes clear both the alternate history aspect of the novel (the Byzantine empire had fallen to the Ottoman Turks almost a century before the action of This Rough Magic takes place) and the nature of the fantasy it contains (non-human creatures, both good and evil, ranging from fauns and undines to demons and angels). This is a typical sort of scenario for what is becoming known as the "new wierd" (a term I think is terrible), but where

One Good Knight by Mercedes Lackey
From Amazon.ca:
When a dragon storms the castle, what should a (virgin) princess do? Why, turn to her studies, of course! But nothing practical-minded Princess Andromeda of Acadia finds gives a definitive solution. The only Traditional answer, though, is soothing the marauding dragon by a virgin sacrifice. Things are going fairly smoothly with the lotteryexcept for the women chosen, of courseuntil Princess Andromeda herself is picked! But facing down the dragon doesn't go quite as planned, and now, with the help of her Champion, Sir George, Andromeda searches for the dragon's lair. But even especially in the Five Hundred Kingdoms, bucking Tradition isn't easy. It takes the strongest of wills, knowledge, quick wits and a refusal to give up, no matter what happens along the way….
The Review:
This book is the sequel to The Fairy Godmother by Mercedes Lackey, which I read last year. It is part of Lackey's Five Hundred Kingdom series, and is in essence a fairy-tale retelling. To refresh everyone's memory, this series takes fairy tale conventions and messes around with them. In the previous novel, we see Elena, who becomes a fairy godmother, fight what is known as "The Tradition" and become the woman that she wants to be and fall in love with the man that she wants to love in love with. In

A Now, do you mean "storyteller," "writer," or "author"? I've known I was a storyteller since I was in my early teens and used to tell made-up stories to the kids that I was babysitting. I knew that I was a writer when I began writing amateur fiction ("fanfic") and costuming articles and getting them published in fanzines and getting some nice comments. I knew I was an author when DAW bought my first trilogy and I got the cover-flat with my name on it! Q Where is your favorite place to write?

Review: Joust by Mercedes Lackey
I had read some mixed reviews of this book (and series). Nothing very bad, not nothing very good either. Since I was a fan of The Obsidian Trilogy, I thought I would give this book a shot.
The premise was fine, but i had a hard time believing Vetch was only 10 or so years old. He comes across as someone much older and wiser..like someone 16-18 years of age. I also got tired of hearing about his oppression and his hatred for his captors. Plus, with no friends other than Ari and Haraket (spelling?), we dont get a lot of interaction between Vetch and other characters. A lot of the dialogue is internal, and following Vetch around during his dragon training, and raising on his dragons.
So, it was an ok read, but nothing too exciting. I'm not a fan of desert settings either, so that didnt help..but that is a personal preference and doesnt factor in the review. I just felt Vetch was too smart, and his isolation and lack of interaction with the other boys made the story a bit sterile. I have purchased the other 3 books in the series, and do plan on reading the 2nd book in the future. Recommended mostly for fans of Lackey's other books.
