Many of her novels and trilogies are interlinked and set in the world of Velgarth , mostly in and around the country of Valdemar . Her Valdemar novels form a complex tapestry of interaction between human and non-human protagonists with many different cultures and social mores The other main world in which she writes is one much like our own, but also populated by elves, mages, vampires, and other mythical beings. Some of the interlocking series in this world are the Diana Tregarde thrillers, the SERRAted Edge books about racecar-driving elves, and the Bedlam's Bard books, describing a young man with the power to work incredible magics through music. Mercedes Lackey
Mercedes Lackey, author of the bestselling Heralds of Valdemar and Bardic Voices series, began life as a child and has been attempting to rectify that error ever since. Named for actress Mercedes McCambridge, she has been trying with no success to get the Benz automobile authorities to recognize the natural link between her name and theirs, and offer her the use of an M100 or some variety of high-end sports car for gratis. This, too, has had a distinct lack of success. Other than writing she can be found at various times prying the talons of the birds of prey she is attempting to nurse back to health out of her hands, endangering her vision by creating various forms of Art Beadwork, and cross-stitching dragons, gryphons, and other semi-mythological fauna. At the moment, her hair is red, her favorite color is green, and she is covered by various members of her flock of pet parrots, cockatoos and macaws, all of which are trying to help her type8shgalal-akejbejks9ife. Mercedes Lackey - Author
CONvergence is pleased to welcome author Mercedes Lackey as a Guest of Honor at CONvergence 2005. Mercedes Lackey (also known as Misty) is a prolific author of fantasy novels. She is best known for her epic Valdemar series, which form a complex tapestry of interaction between diverse human and non-human cultures. Mercedes Lackey describes herself this way: "I'm a storyteller; that's what I see as `my job.' My stories come out of my characters; how those characters would react to the given situation. Maybe that's why I get letters from readers as young as thirteen and as old as sixty-odd." Music plays an important role in Mercedes’ works, as she explains: "I frequently will write a lyric when I am attempting to get to the heart of a crucial scene; I find that when I have done so, the scene has become absolutely clear in my mind, and I can write exactly what I wanted to say. Another reason is because of the kind of novels I am writing: that is, fantasy, set in an other-world, semi-medieval atmosphere. Music is very important to medieval peoples; bards are the chief newsbringers. When I write the ‘folk music’ of these peoples, I am enriching my whole world, whether I actually use the song in the text or not." Her writing contains a prominent theme of tolerance throughout. "I suppose that in everything I write, I try to expound the creed I gave my character Diana Tregarde in Burning Water: 'There's no such thing as 'one, true way;' the only answers worth having are the ones you find for yourself; leave the world better than you found it.'"

Executive summary: Valdemar series Lackey was born in Chicago, but was raised mostly in the northwestern corner of Indiana, where she had what she describes as "a normal childhood". It was during her high school years in Highland, Indiana, that she developed her interest in writing, creating what she terms "pastiches of Andre Norton ". Despite her interest in writing she majored in biology in college, graduating from Purdue University in 1972 with a B.S. in that field. Underwhelmed by the job opportunities afforded by her credential (after graduation she worked at everything from "artist's model to lab technician at the Mosquito Genetics Project to short-order cook"), Lackey sought training as a computer programmer. She gained a position with a major airline and relocated to Oklahoma. Meanwhile, Lackey continued to write in her spare time, and she discovered the world of science fiction conventions (she would eventually meet future husband Larry Dixon at a small con in Meridian, Mississippi) as well as the Society for Creative Anachronisms. She was fortunate enough to meet both

Posted by Tasha Saecker on December 24, 2003 8:46 PM Mercedes Lackey Homepage This is a great time to check out Lackey's website, since she has several new books out right now and another one arriving in January. Teen readers enjoy Lackey, especially the Valdemar series. I just completed Exile's Valor and really enjoyed it. But I enjoy Lackey's writing and her obvious love of her characters and setting, that it is easy for me to return to Valdemar time and again. A great author to recommend to teens looking for adventure and magic in their novels.

I started reading Mercedes Lackey years ago. She is definitely one of my favorite authors. I fell in love with several of the characters. I laugh; I cry. Not many other author's books get me to do that. I lose myself in her worlds. Anyways, here is a copy of the books in my bookshelf (... and possibly of books forthcoming ). New books have next to them. This page has been done in association with Amazon.com Books that take place in Valdemar The Heralds of Valdemar The Last Herald-Mage

Welcome!
If you've found this site, you've either made a mistake in looking for a fine German automobile, or your idea of proper transportation is a pure white, blue-eyed horse that talks to you in your head, a shape-changing dragon, a hot racecar employing technology that isn't exactly "off the shelf", or a basket hung between two magnificent gryphons. If it's the latter, welcome! I'm Mercedes Lackey, and together with my husband and partner Larry Dixon, and collaborators Rosemary Edgehill, Roberta Gellis, Josepha Sherman, James Mallory, and Eric Flint and Dave Freer, I write books. Lots and lots of books; we're well over fifty now, and I fully intend to surpass Isaac Asimov's total of a hundred before too long. You'll find all manner of information about those books and the worlds in them if you go hunting around in this site. You'll also find some information about us as well-but not too much, I hope, just enough to give you some ideas and fun things you might want to get into yourselves. This site is really meant to be about the work and the worlds and how to enhance your enjoyment, not to be a big old Hollywood Star ego-fest for me! And if you're looking for a fine German automobile, you probably want the

Mercedes Lackey Mercedes entered this world on June 24, 1950, in Chicago, had a normal childhood and graduated from Purdue University in 1972. During the late 70's she worked as an artist's model and then went into the computer programming field, ending up with American Airlines in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition to her fantasy writing, she has written lyrics for and recorded nearly fifty songs for Off-Centaur, a small recording company specializing in science fiction folk music. "I began writing out of boredom; I continue out of addiction. I can't `not' write, and as a result I have no social life! I began writing fantasy because I love it, but I try to construct my fantasy worlds with all the care of a `high-tech' science fiction writer. I apply the principle of TANSTAAFL [ `There ain't no such thing as free lunch' , credited to Robert Heinlein) to magic, for instance; in my worlds, magic is paid for, and the cost to the magician is frequently a high one. I try to keep my world as solid and real as possible; people deal with stubborn pumps, bugs in the porridge, and love-lives that refuse to become untangled, right along with invading armies and evil magicians. And I try to make all of my characters, even the `evil magicians,' something more than flat stereotypes. Even evil magicians get up in the night and look for cookies, sometimes.
