Bolinas Section
This is Bolinas, California.
The home of the poets. -Aram Saroyan About an hour's drive north of San Francisco, up the coast and around the Bolinas lagoon from Stinson Beach, the town of Bolinas seems like an island just off shore. One day it may be just that. Perched on the southernmost tip of the Point Reyes Peninsula, Bolinas is on the western side of the San Andreas Fault, pulling away from the continent. Perhaps this geological fact has had an effect, on some cosmic level, upon the consciousness of the Bolinas citizenry. Since the early seventies the media has portrayed Bolinas as a home for the odd, the wacky, and the certifiably strange. While it's true that the place attracted more than its share of bohemians, hippies, visionary sandal-makers, and mystic organic farmers, it is unfair to view the place, as one Marin County supervisor did, "an asylum run by the inmates". On the contrary, during the seventies an experiment in community took place in Bolinas that is both noble and extraordinary. This experiment was documented by Orville Schell in his 1974 book The Town That Fought to Save Itself During this same period Bolinas was also home to one of the most intense collections of poets in one place not around an academic or university scene. Not having that academic presence made for a more visionary, "utopian" atmosphere—the politics of the place so important and interesting. It wasn't simply a hippie alternative situation, an easy comfortable scene for artists, but a

    Manuscript Collection 362 Collection Description:
    Broadsides dating from the 1940s-1980s.
    9 cubic feet
Processed by Craig Gordon, F. Jason Torre, and Kristen J. Nyitray, August 2002.
    Introduction
The Literary Broadsides Collection documents independent publishers and authors of popular culture in the mid-twentieth century. Reference "checklists" such as Six Poets of the San Francisco Renaissance: Portraits and Checklists by David Kherdian, housed within our collection, indicates a possible method of selection for this collection.
The collection is arranged alphabetical by author. Items housed in acidic or metal housings have been removed from these housings for preservation reasons. These materials have been placed in acid free folders and containers. All metal clips have been removed and replaced in accordance with accepted archival standards of preservation.
    History
The essence of literary creativity exhibited in this collection reflects the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The freedom to communicate uninhibitedly enables the writer to explore issues in a new manner, practically reinventing the communication process as a whole. As a result, authors and poets sought out private, independent publishers and presses to further promote their intellectual and creative ideals, and in some instances, established their own.

At that young age, she dictated a poem to her teacher, who had it printed in the school newspaper. In high school, she was in charge of the feature page of her school paper, chronicling interesting and unusual people in and around Santa Barbara. In college, Joanne studied poetry and philosophy before moving to San Francisco in 1957. There she met the Beats, including Gary Snyder, who she would later marry in Japan. While in San Francisco, Joanne began studying Zen Buddhism, a practice she would continue throughout her life. In 1960, she moved to Japan and married Gary Snyder, partly to appease his sponsor in Japan, Ruth Fuller Sasaki, as she would not let them live together unless they were married (Knight 198). Joanne remained in Japan until 1964, a period recorded in her book Japan and India Journals: 1960-1964 . An excerpt of this work is included below. Her writing from this time is a priceless mix of everyday recordings and her own observations about her life and the world as she sees it. This attention to small detail and specific images, reminiscent of haiku, became a trademark of her poetry.

Online Edition: Spring 2003 As Ever Selected Poems Joanne Kyger Penguin Poets ($20) by Gary Gach This gathering, an overdue celebration, presents an awesome range of poems with a stunning developmental narrative baseline, from Joanne Kyger's discovery of her "voice" on through 40-some years of evolution into one of the leading literary voices of her generation. Naturally, wide recognition's been delayed merely due to an extra X-chromosome (the same reason that Joyce and Pound are still commonly valued over Woolf and Stein), but also contributory may be Kyger's humilitya stance which makes her work all the more endearing. Further reasons that Kyger remains a Poet's Poet, and thus too well-kept a secret: * Hewing to the middle voice.
* Reporting the splendor of mere being.
* Her use of a multi-vocal, intertextual, and sometimes ironic discourse, but referential to an individually lived world, complete with a moral sensibility (like, say, Creeley's), and narrative. Kyger has also remained elusive as to affiliation, though she's been closely associated with Robert Duncan, Jack Spicer, and the San Francisco Renaissance; the Beats; Black Mountain and Charles Olson's projective verse; the New York School (she's born the same month and year as Ted Berrigan); the Bolinas poets; and more recently the Language School. And she's rooted in Pacific Rim culture, with Eurocentricity still dominant in the apparatus of fame (New York as closer to Berlin-Paris-London; California as closer to Mexico, Bali, Australia).
