Ten New Lovely Unpublished Poems
by Joanne Kyger
Joanne Kyger's work reveals her as one of the major experimenters, hybridizers, and visionaries of poetry. Kyger is very much a poet of place, with a truly strong voice delicate, graceful, and never wasteful; her poems explore themese of friendship, love, community, and morality, and draw on Native American myth as well as Asian religion and philosophy. Kyger's love for poetry manifests itself in a grander scheme of consiousness-expansion and lesson, but always in the realm of every day. She has published over 20 books of poetry. She teaches summers at Naropa University's Writing Program and at New College of San Francisco. She was a winner of the National Poetry Series in 1983 for her book Going On . poetry
As Ever by Joanne Kyger
There's a popular notion of poetry that fetishizes "subject," expects lines to be evenly plopped down the left-hand margin of the page, demands "depth of feeling", epiphanic moments of appreciative self-awareness, possession of deep dark universal meanings or eternal glum emptiness, etc., ad nauseum, kar-plunk and kar-plooey. No wonder poetry has suffered so much in this country. The popular projection of it is alien from the facts and realities of life in 21st-century America. You might think after the extraordinary drive by William Carlos Williams in the 1920s to push the written arts back into the flesh and blood values of the commonplace, thugs of boredom like Edward Hirsch and other New Yorker magazine poets would be ignored today as fuddy-duddy reductivists. Happily, Penguin in recent years has been publishing post-war poets whose conceptions of the art reach back to Williams, Gertrude Stein, and others. While big publishers take few chances on young writers, it's heartening to see Ted Berrigan, Philip Whalen and other New Americans (post-war poets who appeared in Donald Allen's groundbreaking 1960 anthology, The New American Poetry ) listed in the Penguin Poets series.

Back to roots: eruditor.com works automatically
Ten years ago, everybody expected that on-line shops would work fully automatically: no staff, no stock, no office, just a computer and delivery service from factory to customer. Prices in on-line shops were expected to be extremely low because of minimal costs. Unfortunately, it didn't work. Customers needed help and information and e-shops needed to pay more employees. Costs and prices in e-shops increased. In eruditor.com

joanne kyger interviewed 9\29\95 by DC in her Bolinas home. SR arrived in May of 59 I looked it up. Bill McNeil told me about him.

About the Book About Suzuki Roshi Interviews
So Suzuki was starting his sitting group a couple of blocks away. There he was in the morning and he had hardly any English at all - sort of like pantomiming what to do. It was difficult to get up and one time I got there and it was a four or nine day when we didn't sit and he got up and tried to explain there was no sitting on these days. I brought him some roses. That was my first formal sitting besides Gary had a little zendo over in Marin - Marin-an I think he called it. Albert Saijo was living at the EWH too. There was a real focus on the Zen of enlightenment, koan, all that stuff that was going in the late fifties. Some kind of open door to whatever it was supposed to be - realization. We were reading all those silly books of DT Suzuki and here was a guy who really showed us how to sit. I think I went to Japan for four years. During this time Bill McNeil was there and he'd gone up to Shunryu Suzuki's home temple, Rinsoin, and had stayed up there. He'd been ordained as a priest whatever that meant. People didn't know. What does that mean? In Japan it means that you'd better take care of the real estate pretty good. He was way out by himself out there and so he left and came to Kyoto and started to sit with the Daitokuji group when the fallout was going on and he just gave it all up. His wife wasn't going to come over, he'd decided he was gay, he had an affair with a Japanese businessman, and he just dropped out of the whole Zen number. He'd say, I'm a homosexual and the way he'd talk about it, I'd say, that's not an identity. It has nothing to do with what your meditation practice is about. So anyway that was during the big fallout in 63.

Introduction: a context for reading Joanne Kyger
Joanne "It is given to the seer to see, but it is then his responsibility to communicate what he sees, that they who cannot see may see, since we are 'members one of another'."
I N THE WORK of Joanne Kyger the fact of presence plays out not in subjective seeing and saying - not as reportage, or confession - but as being and saying. The self is phenomenal and therefore as likely to be seen as to see; seeing the self is not an act of introspection only, but of an arraying. The self is among , always in relation, and in Joanne Kyger's case, in a "broad / sweeping form" of relations - in "being there." For over 40 years she has, in various and particular ways, engaged with her circumstances, a fact to which the essays collected in this feature attest. The results of her way of being and saying, though constantly brought into print with one or another of the small presses in the tradition of the New American Poetry, have escaped the critical eye - and in that Joanne Kyger is at once very similar to women writers of her generation, and very different from them.
The form "of being there" that readers of the now-called "Beat Generation" encounter differs vastly from what it

Abstract
The correspondence of an important member of the 'post-beat' West Coast poetry community. The bulk of the collection covers the period from 1957 to 1972. Included are letters, cards, drawings, and poems from Joe Brainard, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Spicer, Lewis Warsh, and Philip Whalen. Also included are eight folders of correspondence between Kyger and Gary Snyder, to whom Kyger was married from 1960 to 1964. The Kyger/Snyder letters range from August 1958 to February 1975, with the bulk of the materials falling between August 1958 and December 1959, the period during which Kyger and Snyder were preparing for their 1960 marriage in Kyoto, Japan. Kyger divorced Snyder in 1964 and married the painter Jack Boyce in 1966. The collection includes much ephemera from the travels of Boyce and Kyger through Europe.
Biography
Joanne Kyger is a West Coast poet who emerged as the Beat movement was beginning to wane in the 1960s. The daughter of Jacob and Anne Kyger, she was born 19 November 1934. Her father's career as a navy officer led to a peripatetic early life: by the time she was fourteen she had lived in Vallejo, Ca. (where she was born), China, Washington, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Illinois. Her father retired in 1949, and the family settled permanently in Santa Barbara, Ca.
