KYD, THOMAS
Specialty Definition: Thomas Kyd
(From Wikipedia , the free Encyclopedia) Thomas Kyd (1558 - 1594) was a dramatist of the Elizabethan era. Kyd was one of the most obscure names in Elizabethan drama until he was found to be the author of The Spanish Tragedy , the most famous Elizabethan play. In 1773, Thomas Hawkins, an early editor of the play, found that Kyd was named as its author in Thomas Heywood's Apologie for Actors . It was another hundred years before the pioneering researches of German scholars began to shed light on his life and work, including the surprising finding that he may have been the original author of Hamlet.
Early life
Thomas Kyd was the son of Francis and Anna Kyd and was baptized in the church of St Mary Woolnoth, Lombard Street, London on November 6, 1558. The baptismal register carries the entry: "Thomas, son of Francis Kidd, Citizen and Writer of the Courte Letter of London". Francis Kyd was a scrivener or notary and held an important position in the Company of Scriveners. In October 1565 Kyd was enrolled in the newly founded Merchant Taylors' School. The headmaster, Richard Mulcaster, was a progressive educator. Edmund Spenser was also a student there. There is no evidence that Kyd went on to either of the universities; he probably followed for a time his father's business. Two letters written by him are extant and his handwriting suggests the training of a scrivener.

Kyd (or Kid) was one of the most important dramatists of the early Elizabethan period. His Spanish Tragedy (c. 1590) was one of the most popular plays of his day. His use of shocking and horrifying melodramatic situations was imitated by subsequent English dramatists, such as Shakespeare in his Titus Andronicus. Many experts believe that Shakespeare used a play (now lost) attributed to Kyd as a source for Hamlet; other plays sometimes attributed to Kyd are The Tragedy of Solyman and Perseda (c. 1588) and

The Spanish Tragedy for a Modern Audience
A shortened version of Thomas Kyd's 1587 drama The Spanish Tragedy. This new version retains the blank verse, major plot line, and Elizabethan atmosphere, but makes the play easily understandable to modern audiences and readers.
From the Introduction:
The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd was the first of the great Elizabethan revenge tragedies and was a major influence on Shakespeare when he wrote Hamlet fifteen years later. Both plays begin with a ghost, end with a climactic play-within-a-play, and include a tragic hero who can't make up his mind.

Biography
KYD, THOMAS (1558-1595). —Dramatist, s. of a London scrivener, ed. at Merchant Taylor's School, appears to have led the life of hardship so common with the dramatists of his time, was for a short time imprisoned for "treasonable and Atheistic views," and made translations from the French and Italian. His drama, The Spanish Tragedy (1594), had extraordinary popularity, and was translated into Dutch and German. Some of the scenes are believed to have been contributed by another hand, probably by Ben Jonson. He also produced a play on the story of Hamlet, not now in existence, and he may have written the first draft of Titus Andronicus. Other plays which have been attributed to him are The First Part of Jeronimo (1605), Cornelia (1594), The Rare Triumphs of Love and Fortune, and The Tragedye of Solyman and Perseda (1599). But, although one of the best known dramatists in his day, very little is now certain either as to his personal history or his works.

  • (born Nov. 6, 1558, London, Eng.—died December 1594, London) English dramatist. With The Spanish Tragedie (1592), he initiated the revenge tragedy, a favourite dramatic form in the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras in which the main motivation was revenge. One of the most popular plays of its time, it prepared the way for William Shakespeare 's Hamlet and other plays. The only other play certainly by Kyd is Cornelia (1594). He was arrested and tortured in 1593 after “atheistical” documents were found in his room; he claimed the papers belonged to Christopher Marlowe , with whom he had shared lodgings. His reputation ruined, he died the next year at age 36. Related Content:
