Australian Association for Research in Education Children’s Literature: Vehicle for the transmission of national culture and identity or the victim of massmarket globalisation? Dr Joyce Bainbridge University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada Judy Thistleton-Martin University of Western Sydney, Australia Abstract The history of children's literature in both Australia and Canada reflects a shared colonial past, evidenced through the development of individual national identities. Research into the relationship between Australian and Canadian children's literature, exemplified through the similarities and differences in the construction of those identities, is virtually unknown. Diakiw (1997) argues that there are powerful commonplaces in the construction of culture and identity, shared values that can be identified and revealed through story and literature. Schools too provide an important forum where these commonplaces can be explored, discussed and debated. This paper will use, as its framework, the ten commonplaces proposed by Diakiw, to explore the connection between Australian and Canadian identity, children’s literature and the classroom. Through a selection of Canadian and Australian children's literature, the distinction between commerce and culture will also be examined. Australian and Canadian children’s book publishers, constantly make decisions about accepting the rhetoric of globalisation or maintaining national and local differences. Such decisions create tensions between ‘cultural value’ and the ‘market’, where text and audience become part of the wider context of industrial and professional production. The implications of these decisions will also be discussed.

Multiculturalism in Canadian children's picture books in English
Paper Presented to the History of the Book in Canada’s
Open Conference for Volume III (1918-2000)
by Gail Edwards and Judith Saltman, University of British Columbia
W Anne of Green Gables Lost in the Barrens and James Houston explored the power of the Canadian North in outdoor adventure survival stories, in which the harsh environment becomes not just the setting but a narrative actor, a motivator of action and a determinant of plot. Houston drew on his deep knowledge of the North to dramatise the clash of cultures in the conflict between traditional ways of life and EuroCanadian attitudes and values. His illustrations for Ghost Paddle carefully present a recreation of life on the Northwest Coast, informed by his exploration of Haida and Tsimshian cultural artifacts. These works were illustrated novels, rather than picturebooks in which image and text interact to form a whole greater than the sum of its parts. By 1971, approximately one-quarter of all Canadians were neither English nor French in origin, and Canadian urban centres became culturally heterogeneous.

A Child Remembered
The Bereaved Families library holds a special place in the hearts of all our members.
The library had its beginning in 1981 when there was really not a great deal of literature about parental grief and to locate a book about a grieving child was almost impossible. Carol Forster, a volunteer bereaved parent and Barbara Storey, a librarian from Trinity College spent many years building the beginnings of our library. It began with twenty copies of a book called The Bereaved Parent by Harriet Schiff and today the library holds over 600 books. Bereaved parents, staff members, volunteers or friends of the organization have donated all of the books. In the cover of each book is a dedication to a loved one. This makes each book very special to all who use our library.

For further assistance in using any of the resources in the Lab, please at the Curriculum Lab Information Services Desk What is multicultural education?
  • It can be defined as "integrated teaching process which deals with ethnic groups, religious groups, gender, children's issues, handicaps and special needs, giftedness, ageism (cited in Bainbridge, 1999)." It's goal should be to affirm and celebrate the differences and similarities of people around the world, and throughout history (Bainbridge, 1999).
Why promote multicultural books in your classroom?
Some basic reasons are listed below:
  • According to Esses And Gardner, "the representation of visible minorities in Canada is expected to continue to rise, so that, by the year 2016, it is estimated that visible minorities will comprise close to 20% of the adult population and 25% of the children (cited in Bainbridge, 1999)." It promotes self esteem in the differences in all of us. It promotes respect for "cultural diversity and common values in Canada," as well as pride in who we are, as outlined in the

Rainy-Day Book Club - Arctic Tales
Posted by Robin Rivers under Animal Watching Creative Parenting Ecology in Action First Nations ... No Comments Never in our history have we as a society been more aware of our direct impact on the environment - with the Arctic taking the brunt of global climate changes. Ice is freezing later, thawing earlier - the balance between life in the sea and on the land has been profoundly altered. What she - and many kiddos of any age - need to connect to issues such as global warming is for adults to talk to them in a language they clearly understand, the language of stories When I headed out recently to see what gems are available in the Arctic tale department I was excited to discover that - for a kiddo who connects to the world through science - there are some truly terrific kid-friendly reference guides out there. But, introducing a new ecosystem that can stump even the brightest of adults needs something a little less clinical in its approach. Enter Snow Amazing by Canadian authors Jane Drake and Ann Love.

Exploring Social Studies through Children's Books
Children's books offer an excellent way for teachers and children to explore the many themes of social studies. Through books children can learn about their own culture and family, cultures around the world, geography, history, community, and more. The following titles represent just a small selection of books touching on these themes.
Adelita: A Mexican Cinderella Story
This version of the Cinderella story is set in Mexico. (Folktales)
Baby Dance by Ann Taylor, illus. by Marjorie van Heerden. 1999. New York: HarperFestival. Ages 2-5.
In this shortened version of Taylor's poem "The Baby Dance," the text is accompanied by pictures of a father dancing lovingly with his baby girl while Mom rests on the couch. (Families)
Beautiful Blackbird by Ashley Bryan. 2003. New York: Atheneum.Ages 4-8.
An adaptation of a Zambian tale, this is a good starting point for discussions about difference, individuality, and community. (Folktales, Community)
Bluebonnet Girl by Michael Lind, illus. by Kate Kiesler. 2003. New York: Henry Holt. Ages 4-8.
