Michael Kusugak grew up in Repulse Bay, a small village in the Northwest Territories. During his childhood, Michael's family traveled by dog team; they lived in igloos in the winter and tents in the summer. He had no access to books as a child, and didn't speak a word of English until he was seven. “Every night, my grandma would tell us a story to put us to sleep,” he recalls. “I take things that are native to me, such as the northern lights, and create a story around them.”

Item Detail Northern Lights: The Soccer Trails Author(s): Kusugak, Michael Arvaarluk Cover: Paperback New Copy: Usually Ships in 5-7 Business Days List Price Our Price You save $1.88 Northern Lights is a beautiful tale that explores the mystical aspects of the northern lights in Inuit culture. Scientists have their own explanations for the phenomenon that occurs when the night sky shimmers with milky white patterns, or displays all the colors of the rainbow. But the Inuit prefer their own explanation: They believe the souls of the dead are engaging in a lively game of soccer, just as they did when they were living. They run all over the sky chasing a walrus head that they use for a soccer ball. This is the story of Kataujaq and the intimate relationship she has with her mother. They do almost everything together; they hug, rub noses and say "Mamaq" which means "You smell so nice." But a great sickness comes and Kataujaq's mother is taken south to the white people's hospital and never comes back. Kataujaq grieves, but is also able to rejoice when she and her grandmother watch the northern lights. This book celebrates family life, intimacy and the glory of nature.

In the video Kusugak talks about his early years, living a nomadic life in igloos and tents, telling stories to children, and working at his home in Rankin Inlet, Northwest Territories. 1994. 24 min.

Bats on Parade A bat parade doubles as an introduction to basic multiplication in this lively story. On a midsummer. s eve, a group of 385 bats march in formation. Their groups illustrate multiplication facts. piccolos piping in twos, flautists marching three by three, and so on, until 385 bats are assembled, carefully grouped to show the sum of the products of 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, and on through 10x10. The numerical problems are pictured in separate illustrations in the corners of the pages. Younger children will enjoy the spunky rhyme, and the boisterous illustrations will give them opportunities to practise counting. Older children will be able to use the book to help them visualize what happens during the multiplication process. Suggested Use: Grade 1; Grade 2; Grade 3; Grade 4; Numbers and Operations
