These days he offers some program suggestions to the Brisbane International Film Festival. In 1984, when My Beautiful Laundrette was released it seemed to come as a bolt from the blue. Stephen Frears had not made a theatrical feature since Gumshoe (1971) and the writer of the film, Hanif Kureishi, was an unknown. Or at least I did not know that he already had had a number of plays produced on the London stage and had won the George Devine Award in 1981. I did not know he was not a novice. Laundrette went on to be nominated for an Oscar and was quickly followed by Sammy and Rosie Get Laid Since then Hanif Kureishi has continued to work in the theatre and has turned his hand to novels, short stories, adaptations and other film scripts for other directors. He has also directed a feature film himself, London Kills Me (1991), and has adapted his novel

In teasing works of art, Kureishi has apparently opened the door to his bedroom and disclosed nasty tales of infidelity and desertion within. Yet what looks like solid biography often turns out to be a deceiving hall of mirrors. He has always adored mischief and provocation, "a bit of a flap". He still does. We should take his scandals with a handful of salt. Intimacy that Faber published (without informing her) in May 1998. Over a single night of heart-searching, Jay, the writer-narrator of

Palgrave Macmillan 191 pages Paperback Readers' guides to essential criticism Thomas (19th- and 20th-century British literature, theater studies, U. of Delaware, London) introduces and sets in context the debates about Kureishi's controversial work. Hanif Kureishi: The Buddha of Suburbia
I have a soft spot in my heart for The Buddha of Suburbia , a tragi-comedy by the British author Hanif Kureishi Saul Bellow's Augie March , in that the book is a coming-of-age story told in broadly comic terms. You could see Balzac in there too, a streak of human comedy such as can be found in Lost Illusions (which Kureishi actually name-checks at one point). Most importantly, though, this is a novel about class, which is of paramount importance to Brits, even as Americans tend to ignore it. Karim Amir begins in the dead-end burbs, graduates into London, falls into debauchery and theater fame, loses his shit but comes out on top. That's the basic gist.
Andy Warhol Jarvis Cocker PFS Post , too. Chris McCabe , particularly, is a UK poet for whom "class" is a vital issue. You could call Chris the Jarvis Cocker of post-avant. If only all US editors were as into "Otherness" as I am, we could start a Trans-Atlantic revolution. Wouldn't that be something? Mis-Shapes, Mistakes, Mis-Fits... posted by P.F.S. Post at

Like his fictional offspring, Kureishi relishes a probing question. In his latest work, the author continues to explore issues of commitment, identity and desire that have fueled his screenplays and novels, from The Buddha of Suburbia to Intimacy The Body finds Adam, a successful married writer of sixty-four, faced with the opportunity of two lifetimes: to have his brain transferred into the body of a recently deceased twenty-five-year-old. Naturally curious, Adam plans a six-month hiatus from his old body, and an experiment that began in the spirit of Lewis and Clark devolves into a European frolic worthy of Masters and Johnson. But when he meets a stranger with bad intentions, his lark takes some serious turns.
