Stephen Frears, 1985), with its unusually subtle rendering of sex, race and class issues. It received an Oscar nomination and won the New York Critics' Award for best screenplay. Some of these preoccupations recurred in the generational and other conflicts of Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (d. Stephen Frears, 1987) and the richly detailed dramas of interracial life in the TV miniseries, The Buddha of Suburbia (BBC, 1993), which he adapted from his own novel, as he did the screenplays for My Son the Fanatic (UK/France, d. Udayan Prasad, 1997) and Intimacy (UK/France, d. Patrice Ch©reau, 2001). The latter was so sexually explicit that, it is said, he had to seek production in France. He both directed and wrote the critically panned London Kills Me (1991), another study of youthful London lives.

KUREISHI, HANIF British Director Hanif Kureishi, an Anglo-Pakistani writer, is best known to international audiences as the screenwriter of My Beautiful Laundrette , one of the greatest international successes of British television's Channel Four. Born in London of an English mother and a Pakistani father, Kureishi documents the population of that city's marginsan underclass of disenfranchised youth, immigrants from former British colonies, leftist intellectuals, sexual outlaws (gays, lesbians, and heterosexuals refusing serial monogamy), and those individuals who cross class, ethnic, and sexual boundaries. His stories are often set in the Notting Hill district, a London neighborhood the center of the country's most violent racial unrest. Notting Hill is also the home of film and television director, Stephen Frears, with whom Kureishi collaborated on two projects for Channel Four's Film on Four, Laundrette and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid.

The writing cure
Hanif Kureishi Published 26 June 2006 Freud's Requiem: mourning, memory and the invisible history of a summer walk
Matthew von Unwerth Continuum, 256pp, £18.99
ISBN 0826480322 Written as a commission in 1915, Sigmund Freud's On Transience is a short, beautiful and enigmatic work. When he wrote it, Freud was 60. His sons Martin (Lucian's father) and Ernest were away at war, and news of them was intermittent. At this stage of his life Freud had few patients, and the Austro-Hungarian empire - with his beloved Vienna at the centre - was being destroyed. There were many reasons for him to be pessimistic, even despairing. In On Transience , however, despair is a state Freud attributes not to himself but to the poet Rilke, one of his companions on the walk "through a blossoming summer landscape" with which the essay opens. Freud's other companion was the writer Lou Andreas-Salomé, formerly Nietszche's lover and now Rilke's. She was evidently someone for whom Freud had a soft spot - he invited her to attend the famous "Wednesday night" meetings at his house. In Freud's Requiem , Matthew von Unwerth has written an absorbing account of the trio's conversation and the essay it inspired. Yet he gives us good reason to believe that the walk never took place. Why should it have done? Freud was a creative writer who had, as a young man, composed poetry, stories, histories and translations. His own analysis was conducted not by another analyst, but by himself, on paper, using a method akin to free association - free writing. The talking cure was initially a writing cure.

Pubished by Faber and Faber, 1990 This is the story of a teenager named Karim growing up in London in the 1970's. He is the son of an Indian father and an English mother. His father, Haroon, is the "Buddha" of the title. Haroon had for years been happy to live like an Englishman but now sees himself as a New Age guru. The book deals with race, marriage breakdown, class and sexual orientation, as narrated by Karim. Can he define his own identity? In the opening chapter Karim meets Eva, his father's English lover. This has major repercussions for Karim. He is besotted by her son Charlie, a singer who later becomes famous in a punk band. Eva also introduces Karim to important people in the theatre world. As an actor he is asked to play Indian parts and is persuaded to fake a strong Indian accent, much to his embarrassment. The book captures again and again the angst between East and West. The characters are memorable and very well developed, e.g. Jamilla, who is a childhood friend of Karims. Her father Anwar foists a husband named Changez on her. The bizarre situation that develops is at times very funny.

Hanif Kureishi
Postcolonial Storyteller By Kenneth C. Kaleta
Table of Contents and Excerpt

"Hanif Kureishi is a proper Englishman. Almost." So observes biographer Kenneth Kaleta. Well known for his films My Beautiful Laundrette and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid, the Anglo-Asian screenwriter, essayist, and novelist has become one of the leading portrayers of Britain's multicultural society. His work raises important questions of personal and national identity as it probes the experience of growing up in one culture with roots in another, very different one. This book is the first critical biography of Hanif Kureishi. Kenneth Kaleta interviewed Kureishi over several years and enjoyed unlimited access to all of his working papers, journals, and personal files. From this rich cache of material, he opens a fascinating window onto Kureishi's creative process, tracing such works as My Beautiful Laundrette, Sammy and Rosie Get Laid, The Buddha of Suburbia, London Kills Me, The Black Album, and Love in a Blue Time from their genesis to their public reception. Writing for Kureishi fans as well as film and cultural studies scholars, Kaleta pieces together a vivid mosaic of the postcolonial, hybrid British culture that has nourished Kureishi and his work.

Writers come to Hanif Kureishi's defence as BBC pulls short story
April 17, 2007 The writers' organisation English PEN is concerned by the BBC's decision to postpone the Radio 4 broadcast of Hanif Kureishi's short story, 'Weddings and Beheadings', a dramatic monologue about an Iraqi cameraman coerced into filming the executions of western captives. The story is one of five nominations for the National Short Story prize due to be broadcast this week. The BBC has said 'we do not now feel that it would be right to broadcast at the moment' following unconfirmed reports that kidnapped BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston has been killed by a jihadist group. Writers including Monica Ali have come to Kureishi's defence, arguing that the BBC's response is misguided. English PEN is challenging the BBC to explain how the decision to postpone this broadcast in any way solves the predicament facing Alan Johnston and other courageous journalists working in troubled zones. English PEN also asks for reassurance that the story will be broadcast in its entirety. If necessary, English PEN will ask the new BBC Trust, which represents licence payers' interests, to investigate this decision. Hanif Kureishi said: 'The abduction of Alan Johnston in Gaza is cruel and terrifying. However, we don't honour persecuted journalists and writers around the world by increasing censorship. We maintain our freedoms by continuing to speak and write about contemporary events. This craven act of censorship by the BBC brings disgrace on this organisation. I don't believe it is something that Alan Johnston would want.'
