Science fiction is more than rocket ships, space aliens and throwaway plots. Explore what the genre can achieve with the book club and Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? In programme two, we heard from Hanif Kureishi about how the process of narrative. You can hear a more of the interview in our exclusive mp3 download . He started by talking about writing about his own life: There are all sorts of memoirs which are quite different to the memoir which I wrote, which is, in fact, extremely respectful towards my father and full of love, but there are other memoirs which are very popular these days of children who have been abused, children who have had sexual relationships with their parents or whose parents have been alcoholic or violent or whatever. And some of these memoirs are extremely powerful and extremely effective, and I would imagine that the writer probably went through a much harder time writing the stuff down than I did writing about my daddy.

Hanif Kureishi "From the start I tried to deny my Pakistani self ... it was a curse and I wanted to be rid of it. I wanted to be like everyone else." (Kureishi, "The Rainbow Sign") Biography Born December 5, 1954 in Bromley, England, Hanif Kureishi grew up experiencing first-hand the racial and cultural clashes that he addresses in most of his work. The product of an interracial marriage between a Pakistani immigrant and an English woman, the inspiration for his work has been drawn from his own life's trials and tribulations as a hybrid of two different races and cultures. Kureishi decided that he wanted to be a writer from a young age, and began writing novels that were considered for publication while he was still a teenager. He studied philosophy at King's College, University of London, and then supported himself by writing pornography under the pseudonym Antonia French. After a humble beginning as an usher for the Royal Theater, Kureishi later became the theater's writer in residence. His first play, Soaking Up the Heat , was produced in 1976 at London's Theater Upstairs. His second play

    Hanif Kureishi and British Multiculturalism
In the August 4 Guardian, the writer Hanif Kureishi weighs in on what British multiculturalism might mean in light of the atmosphere of extreme intolerance that prevails at some of the London Mosques. (Via Locana
Kureishi's name has been in the air a bit since it was revealed that the men behind the 7/7 bombings in London were second-generation Brit-Asians. The spread of an ultra-fundamentalist ethos amongst second-generation British Muslims was something Kureishi explored in his screenplay to My Son the Fanatic (which began as a short story in The New Yorker ) as well as in The Black Album , a novel responding to the turmoil in the British Muslim community following the Rushdie affair
But the interesting part of this essay isn't really its central point about the poison of religious extremism –- which I think any moderate or progressive person would probably agree with. What is more intriguing is actually Kureishi's unusual use of the word 'multiculturalism' in the context of British 'faith schools'. There's a lot of confusion about what these schools are and how they work (especially for us non-Brits), and in this post I'll explore them a little.
    Here's Kureishi:
If the idea of multiculturalism makes some people vertiginous, monoculturalism of whatever sort is much worse. Political and social systems have to define themselves in terms of what they exclude, and conservative Islam is leaving out a lot. . . .

Arthur J Pais Nearly two years after it was completed and over a year since it was acclaimed at the Cannes International Film Festival, director Udayan Prasad's controversial film, My Son the Fanatic that drew the ire of fundamentalists in England, is due shortly in North America through Miramax Pictures. Miramax, the distributor of Oscar-winners Shakespeare In Love and Life Is Beautiful has held several special screenings for My Son the Fanatic in the past two months to build a strong word of mouth publicity for the film. Writer Hanif Kureishi describes the film set in a small British city foremost as a contemporary love story with an ideological edge. He unfolds the story of a reticent Pakistani taxi driver (Om Puri) whose friendship with a prostitute is turning romantic just as his teenage son is embracing fundamentalism.
