Milan Kundera on ecstasy
This is a quote from Milan Kundera 's book Testaments Betrayed I recall my childhood: sitting at the piano, I would throw myself into passionate improvisations for which I needed nothing but a C-minor chord and the subdominant F-minor, played fortissimo over and over again. The two chords and the endlessly repeated primitve melodic motif made me experience an emotion more intense than any Chopin, any Beethoven, has ever given me. (One time my musician father, completely furious I never saw him so furious before or after rushed into the room, lifted me off the piano stool, and with a disgust he could barely control, carried me into the dining room and set me down under the table.) What I was experiencing during those improvisations was ecstasy . What is ecstasy? The boy banging on the keyboard feels an enthusiasm (or a sorrow, or a delight), and the emotion rises to such a pitch of intensity that it becomes unbearable: the boy flees into the state of blindness and deafness where everything is forgotten, even oneself. Through ecstasy, emotion reaches its climax, and thereby at the same time its negation (its oblivion). Ecstasy means being "outside oneself," as indicated by the etymology of the Greek word: the act of leaving one's position (

If you're asking the question then No it wouldn't be i have found kundera at his best in "laughable loves", which is a collection of his short stories. but, he is more famous for his novels "immortality", "unbearable lightness of being", "the book of laughter and forgeting", etc. he is good. rather very good. any insights on how Kundera's views of history (in "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting") are reflected by his thoughts on technology? Right from the begnning of his carrier, reading his early novels 'The joke' and 'Life is elsewhere' and (may be more importantly) 'Laughable loves' I could feel touches of a great and differnt novelist. If Marqueze is one of the two poles of second half of twentieth century novel, he is certainly the other pole.

    Kundera, Milan
Kundera, Milan u key The Joke (1967, tr. 1974), brought him government disapproval and resulted in the loss of his citizenship. This, coupled with the 1968 Soviet invasion, prompted him to flee Czechoslovakia; he settled (1975) in France, where he became a citizen in 1980. Often set against a totalitarian backdrop yet usually apolitical in tone, his widely translated fiction looks ironically at love, sex, and the possibility of spiritual fulfillment in the modern age. His works frequently treat themes of exile and return, memory and forgetfulness, nostalgia and regret. Kundera's most acclaimed novels are The Book of Laughter and Forgetting (tr. 1980, 1996) and

Anger
A wave of anger washed over me, anger against myself, at my age at the time, that stupid lyrically age, when a man is too great a riddle to himself to be interested in the riddles outside himself and when other people are mere walking mirrors in which he is amazed to find his own emotions, his own worth.
Compassion

Future
P eople are always shouting they want to create a better future. It's not true. The future is an apathetic void of no interest to anyone. The past is full of life, eager to irritate us, provoke and insult us, tempt us to destroy or repaint it. The only reason people want to be masters of the future is to change the past.

Milan Kundera on Politics and the Novel
Yvon Grenier
Abstract
. Milan Kundera This article examines Milan Kundera's perspective on the contrasting logics of art and politics. It is the product of a broader research project on the essayistic works of writers and intellectuals who participated actively in the political debates of their time while claiming to have the ability to examine the realm of politics from outside, fortified with the superior cognitive and moral elixir of art. Kundera's ideas are elegantly formulated in essays such as "The Art of the Novel" ("L'art du roman"), "Testaments Betrayed" ("Les testaments trahis"), and recently "Le rideau" ("The Curtain"; not yet translated into English). Most of his thought on art and politics is the object of literary experimentation in his novels, either in the thematic structure of the novels themselves, or in self-standing reflections and digressions formulated by the characters or the narrator. This particular article focuses mainly on Kundera's essays, essentially because this is where Kundera explicitly and intentionally uses a propositional register that lends itself to the universality of the law of contradiction.

For the most part, the volume is a collection of previously published material. As the editor explains: "... many scholars and critics felt that... reviews, interviews, and specially commissioned essays by noted specialists in Czech literature should be collected in order to further elucidate both Kundera's past works... and those that were published after the appearance of the Aji collection" (p. 2). We learn from Petro's Introduction that this collection is a "remake" of Aji's.

And yet, in my view The Book of Laughter and Forgetting is like this but even more so. I've always just thought of ULB as nothing but Czechs n Sex, and found it enjoyable at that. If you try to think of it as serious philosophy it does become pretty silly pretty quickly. July 16, 2007 9:06 AM Kundera is strange like that all of his stuff reads like a combination of the most insightful things you've ever heard and near poetry of expression with dumb ass cliches and bass-ackwards goofball philosophy. I guess its part of his charm, but its not something you normally run into when not reading Robert Anton Wilson or some other joker from that era. July 16, 2007 9:06 AM

Milan Kundera on the History of Art
Milan Kundera on the history of art:
Applied to art, the notion of history has nothing to do with progress; it does not imply improvement, amelioration, an ascent; it resembles a journey undertaken to explore unknown lands and chart them. The novelist's ambition is not to do something better than his predecessors but to see what they did not see, say what they did not say. Flaubert's poetics does not devalue Balzac's, any more than the discovery of the North Pole renders obsolete the discovery of America.
