22. Dalkey Archive Press: An Interview With Milan Kundera

Clarifications, Elucidations: An Interview with Milan Kundera By Lois Oppenheim
Despite his reverence for privacy, Kundera was willing to discuss a variety of topics throughout our meetings. The scope and purpose of the interview ultimately derived from our conversations were refined, however, by a mutual interest in particularizing, in clarifying a number of concrete, and not necessarily related, points of interest. What follows is such a collage. Lois Oppenheim: I would like to take advantage of these meetings with you to clarify a number of more or less concrete points. To begin, in The Art of the Novel The Art of the Novel , Central Europe is very important. Would you mind clarifying just what this notion of Central Europe represents for you, just what its real perimeters are? MK: Let's simplify the problem, an enormous one, and limit ourselves to the novel. There are four great novelists: Kafka, Broch, Musil, Gombrowicz. I call them the "pleiad" of Central Europe's great novelists. Since Proust, I can't see anyone of greater importance in the history of the novel. Without knowing them, not much of the modern novel can be understood. Briefly, these authors are modernists, which is to say that they are impassioned by a search for new forms. At the same time, however, they are completely devoid of any avant-garde ideology (faith in progress, in revolution, and so on), whence another vision of the history of art and of the novel: They never speak of the necessity of a radical break; they don't consider the formal possibilities of the novel to be exhausted; they only want to radically enlarge them.

"[I]n Kundera's work, comedy and farce, although they are persistent elements in his sense of life and practice of art, are always subverted and transformed by darker, more ambiguous tones. . . . 'The Farewell Party' is the kind of 'political novel' a cunning, resourceful, gifted writer writes when it is no longer possible to write political novels."

His early musical inclination seems logical considering that his father, Ludvik Kundera, was a concert pianist and musicologist. Ludvik Kundera had earned recognition for collaborating with famed Czech composer Leos Janacek and for serving as rector of the state conservatory in Brno. The musical influence and training left an impact on Milan. Long after he became a writer, he would describe his openly constructed novels using musical terms and analogies. Kundera studied both music and film as a young man, all the while writing poetry. His first published works were anthologies of poetry, including

    Chapter I: Thoughts
I stood beside the window and thought about this novel. What would I write it about? Each writer (and I am one, obviously) has this problem. The characters of one's novel are like flies in a pot of honey; it is much easier to attract flies than to fill the pot. I looked out of the window into the dim morning air and thought about this novel when I heard somebody loudly flush a toilet bowl. Perhaps it was that shy young girl in the apartment next door. I will call her Maria, just to make my writer's task simpler. Maria works in a local newspaper, and every morning she hurries to the tram that takes her to work. Listening to the sound of flushing toilet, I thought that she may have had far less trouble emptying her bowels than I writing this novel excreting the honey for the pot, so to speak. Obviously, the latter is more difficult due to the qualitative difference between the two substances. However, our motivations hers for emptying her bowels and mine for writing this novel are exactly the same: to relieve ourselves. The front door of the apartment building slammed, and Maria hurried to the tram stop. Why does she always seem to be in such a hurry, I asked myself. Maybe she is unconsciously trying to escape the sound of the toilet bowl by assuming this businesslike, hurried appearance? I should look more deeply into this fascinating matter.

    "Ignorance"
(Reviewed by Bill Robinson NOV 12, 2002) Ignorance , the new novel by Milan Kundera, easily could have been called The Book of Leaving and Forgetting . Possibly, that title would have been too similar to an earlier work, The Book of Laughter of Forgetting . Unfortunately, little laughter can be found in the new book. However, despite its overall theme of regret and remorse, it is filled with genuine insight as well as clever comment on clearly recognizable human foibles. It visits places that we have all been without itself becoming redundant.

By Milan Kundera Translated from the French by Linda Asher HarperCollins. 168 pp. $22.95 Joseph Conrad once wrote that his purpose as a novelist was simply "to make you see." According to Viktor Shklovsky the influential Russian formalist critic of the 1920s and '30s our daily, automatic routines leach all the freshness from existence, so that we no longer experience the wonder of the people and life around us. Art's purpose, consequently, is to "defamiliarize" the familiar, to shake up our dulled perceptions, to reinvest the dingy, gray and arthritic universe with richness, color, vitality. According to Milan Kundera's similar literary theory of "the curtain," we grow up with cultural preconceptions that "pre-interpret" the world and close off various aspects of experience. He writes that "a magic curtain, woven of legends, hung before the world. Cervantes sent Don Quixote journeying and tore through the curtain. The world opened before the knight errant in all the comical nakedness of its prose." Ever since, the true novelist's ambition "is not to do something better than his predecessors but to see what they did not see, say what they did not say."
