The Associated Press Maxine Kumin REVIEWS OF MAXINE KUMIN'S EARLIER BOOKS:
  • Sebastian and the Dragon
"This latest of reluctant-dragon stories is a merry bit, faintly reminiscent of one of Steig's small-fry 'Dreams of Glory.'"
  • A Winter Friend ' and ' Follow the Fall
"'Follow the Fall,' the third in a series of seasonal books couched in easy-to-read verses, is primarily for school use. Curiously, although Mrs. Kumin is a poet, this is a rather prosaic affair. . . . 'A Winter Friend,' in the same series and same format, is more concentrated, more all of a piece and more effective."
  • More Eggs of Things
"A highly satisfactory story about Buzz and Skippy, Skippy's younger sister, Pest, and their shaggy dog, Cowboy."
  • Speedy Digs Downside Up
"Told in rollicking, witty rhyme, Maxine Kumin's story is delightfully absurd. And while enjoying unhackneyed fantasy, the reader will also learn something of subsurface geology."

    Maxine Kumin
Maxine Kumin This Pulitzer Prize-winning poet raises horses on a 200-acre farm near Warner, New Hampshire. Kumin was born of Jewish parents in the Germantown suburb of Philadelphia and her father was a pawnbroker. She received a B.A. degree (1946) and an M.A. (1948) from Radcliffe College. In 1946 she married a Harvard student, Victor Kumin, who became an engineering consultant. Kumin's poetry focuses on family relations, the fragility of our environment, and the life and death of animals. Her publications of short stories, novels, and essays are in addition to her more than a dozen books of poetry, beginning with Halfway in 1961. Her subjects are more realistic than romantic and dare to grapple with threats to humans as well as animals both from scientific military power and from fundamentalist Christianity. When Maxine Kumin joined Anne Sexton in 1957 in studying poetry with John Holmes in Boston, she and Anne became dear friends and wrote children's books together before Anne Sexton committed suicide.

UAlbany, Uptown Campus Maxine Kumin is renowned for her meditations on farm life, the love between parents and children, and the New England landscape. A longtime resident of rural New Hampshire, where she owns a small horse farm, Kumin has observed barnyard dramas, the life and death of animals, and the change of seasons for decades. Critics often compare her to fellow New Englanders Henry David Thoreau and Robert Frost. In July of 1998, at the age 73, Kumin was critically injured in a horse carriage accident, and was expected to die of her injuries. Her survival is the subject of her 2000 memoir, "Inside the Halo and Beyond: The Anatomy of a Recovery." "This book, while telling of a most personal catastrophe, ties us continually to the natural world that is the center of this author's life and work…. [Kumin] resonates wisdom while announcing a triumph of body and soul." - Anne Roiphe, "New York Times" "No poet writes more richly and more subtly of mother-daughter relations."
