Reading List
Tuesday, January 16, 2007 I suspect some people keep their bibliographies secret or are willed by their advisors to explore certain texts. Working with Craig Lesley I have the wonderful privilege to read whatever I damn well please. Fortunately, John Rember met with me and went over my 9 page list of authors and highlighted the best. I am confident with his judgment and am therefore reduced to the following books.
I can't decide if I should start with Wodehouse, Eliot or Dahl. Or perhaps I should get Moby Dick out of the way while I'm still starry-eyed and naive.
Bibliography:
1. Albee, Edward. Three Tall Women.
2. Alvarez, Julie. Saving the World.
3. Atwood, Margaret. Wilderness Tips. Bluebeard’s Egg. Oryx and Crake.
4. Ballard, J.G. collected stories.
5. Barthes, Roland. Essays.

294. Saying Things - Marilyn Krysl
Three things quickly - pineapple, sparrowgrass, whale -
and then on to asbestos. What I want to say tonight is
words, the naming of things into their thing,
yucca, brown sugar, solo, the roll of a snare drum,
say something, say anything, you'll see what I mean.
Say windmill, you feel the word fly out from under and away.

Reading Marilyn Krysl
From " Every God Will Leave Us : An Interview With Marilyn Krysl ", a rather long passage chocked full with information (with apologies; I can't bear to cut off anything):
And lyric poetrybecause it's a voice that sings rather than tells its grief or joyis ritual. We use it to purge ourselves of grief and loss, to lament suffering, to exorcise anguish, and to praise, honor and celebrate life. It engages us at an elemental level, and it's oral. The page is merely notation for HOW the poem is to be spoken, a notation of how the poet heard it. Traditional forms interest me because they are repositories of lyric ritual with which to engage. They build in certain musical givens that the poet then engages these in a creative way.
When I was at work on the poems in More Palomino
I like Millay. She was one of the poets I read extensively, at a time when her work was considered declasse because Modernism was in vogue and she wasn't modernist. In A Formal Feeling Comes , the 1994 anthology compiled by Annie Finch, Annie reminds us of what I myself experienced then: that formal poetics at that time were in ill repute because they'd been linked with reactionary politics and elitest aesthetics. It became a serious issue for women writers, because Williams had put down formal verse, and Joyce had said of The Waste Land that it ends "poetry for ladies." As though women who wrote couldn't possibly handle the great subjects. Or as though metrics couldn't possibly encompass the issues of the age.

Article Excerpt
My mother says I have to eat breakfast every morning. I take my cereal and fruit outside to my special tree. I like to sit and lean against the trunk. It is like sitting on my mother's lap. I am the only one who knows the tree's name. Her name is Bertha. Green apples dangle from her branches like little green earrings.

Baghdad:
The Disappeared Girls.
BY MARILYN KRYSL
Luxury, then, is a way of being ignorant.
—Amiri Baraka A girl outside the primary-schoolyard gate
has disappeared. Another—no one sees—
doesn't come home. A black car ate a broken
girl's shrill scream. Her father: She's my jewel!
I curse the West. We didn't ask for war.
Those men who come: don't they have daughters?

War slams down. Doors swing shut. Daughters
stay in. One father drove a truck, his gate stood open, he paid his daughter's school. The war blasts on. His girl's smart: her teacher sees in her another teacher. Now his gold leaves school to sweep a floor: another broken promise. No truck, no work: he owns his broken heart, and hers. Other pink-blouse daughters watch TV all day. Behind each sapphire three thousand sweating horses. Behind each gate a girl on hold. Scared. And bored—how seize
