The flat-out perfectly drawn characters in Stories from the Afterlife
Work Shirts for Madmen
Stories from the Afterlife Stories from the Afterlife is a moving and compelling collection.
Creatures of Habit and Carolina Moon
Stories from the Afterlife is a raw, brave collection, punctuated with surprising moments of tenderness and hope. Dalton writes with the eye of an artist and the precision of a poet.
Better Homes and Husbands
Quinn Dalton burrows so deeply into the hearts and psyches of her characters that, while reading her work, one has the unshakable feeling that she has rifled through our own secret thoughts, revealing our very own fears and desires. Stories from the Afterlife is jam-packed with Dalton's brilliance and proves, once again, that she deserves recognition as a master in the realm of contemporary American letters.

When I Was a Loser : True Stories of (Barely) Surviving High School Edited by John McNally
Reviewed by Joanna Pearson
Edited by John McNally Free Press, 2007 John McNally’s website Live Podcast on Writers Revealed Elle Feature ... Buy the Book There’s something about adolescence— all that magnified awkwardness and longing—that makes it perennially tempting subject matter for writers. The need to reformulate one’s adolescence into hilarious/meditative anecdotes has led to our greatest stock caricatures, shelves of bad (and occasionally good) YA fiction, and the entire filmography of John Hughes. Personal essays on adolescence tend to fall into extreme categories. Done poorly, you get a sappy knock-off Dawson’s Creek episode; done well, you get funny, trenchant writing like that compiled in the essay collection When I Was a Loser : True Stories of (Barely) Surviving High School, edited by John McNally.

Find more of the same, including autobiography in a wafer-thin disguise as fiction, in Ames's My So-Called Secret Life The Geography of Tim e: The Temporal Misadventures of a Social Psychologist, or How Every Culture Keeps Time Just a Little Bit Differently
Robert Levine

Everything you wanted to know about time but were too busy to ask. Psychologist Levine looks at time cross-culturally, at the relationship between time and power, time and happiness, the history of timekeeping, and how long it takes to buy stamps in various American cities and what that tells you about the people living there. Some of the differences between cultures seem a bit oversimplified, although he also presents evidence, for example, that people in warmer places probably do have slower internal clocks, hence their slower pace of life. Also, obese people are more likely than average sized people to estimate the passage of time correctly. What exactly this means, I don't know, but it's interesting reading. Real Life, Lucky Girls, and Advances in Non-Fiction
A Literary Saloon Dialogue
The Scene: It is relatively mild out, for August. Inside the Literary Saloon, it is almost cold. The air conditioning is turned up high, rattling as it loudly churns and vents the chilled air. A steady stream of cold flows round the room.
It's summer.
The city is quieter, restless, hot. People have fled. They continue to flee for long weekends, or for longer. They are on trips. They are on vacation. At conferences. Abroad. At writers' retreats. In beach house summer-shares. On excursions.
Replacing them are the imported summer stand-ins. The tourists.
The Literary Saloon is a destination, of sorts. For wide-eyed foreigners and country-folk, looking to see what big city literary life is like, hoping for a whiff of the bohemian.
A is here too, the rare local who is a regular even in the off-season. He is on his third or fourth whisky, leafing through a magazine.
Busy B arrives after a day filled with employment-related activity. Loosening his tie he nods to

Authorial Beauty Contests
Recently I was asked to give my opinion on this article on authors and beauty. I advise you to read the article and form your opinions before hearing mine.
July 16, 2001 — What if the only way a magazine would run a short story by Eudora Welty was if she agreed to an accompanying photo in which she posed as the protagonist of her story — a "' Sex and the City' –type woman," say, "wearing a bright red spaghetti–strap dress and sandals"?
What if Nadine Gordimer had to agree to a shot where she's wearing a low–cut blouse and "kneeling on crushed velvet"?
What if Philip Roth had to pose "staring blankly while holding a fat pug inside a Bulgarian restaurant"?
No self–respecting editor would propose such insulting childishness, of course, to such esteemed writers.
I don’t know. Is this their first time getting publishing? Now? And they were young and relatively attractive people with no other publishing prospects?
