Partial Answers: Journal of Literature and the History of Ideas [Access article in PDF] Epigones in the House of Language: Benjamin on Kraus Alexander Gelley University of California, Irvine Abstract What links Walter Benjamin and Karl Kraus is a fascination with the dregs of public discourse, its "by-products" or "waste products," but these to be understood as the negative pole of an exalted ideal of language, though conceived differently by each one. Benjamin was an avid reader of Die Fackel , a polemical gazette focused on Viennese journalism that Kraus published from 1899 to 1936. Benjamin's 1931 essay on Kraus is one of his most densely woven, recondite productions, filled with formulations that reach back to Benjamin's 1916 text "On Language as Such and on the Language of Man." There, the act of naming designates the dimension of divine creative power in pre-Babelic language. In Kraus's practice of citation Benjamin found traces of such a primordial capacity of language, a thetic power akin to divine naming. Citing in this sense involves not only the retrieval of a text or a concept, but intervention into the temporal process, the activation of a past in the present: citing as in citing. For Kraus, Benjamin wrote, "justice and language remain founded in each other," making it clear that while justice in a legal sense (

Introduction
Print this section Karl Kraus (1874–1936), Austrian satirist, social critic, playwright, and poet. Kraus took as his theme the gradual corruption of moral, intellectual, and artistic life in Austria, foretelling the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. II
Early Life
Print this section Kraus was born in Jičn, Bohemia (then part of the Austrian Empire, now part of the Czech Republic), and spent most of his life in Vienna, Austria. From an early age his interests were in literature, poetry, and the theater. His first published essays and articles on literature and culture were boldly independent in comparison to other writers of the time. As a result, he was roundly criticized. Although he first accepted the criticism as a challenge, Kraus eventually came to think that these rebuffs were instead the symptoms of a deeply corrupt society. In response to his critics, Kraus founded his own journal, Die Fackel

A Human Concern
In this universal purblindness, much of human concern is lost from sight, falling outside the scope of a professional morbidity that sees every kind of behaviour as an ailment, every belief as a delusion, and every attitude as a sickness to be cured. Curmudgeon: stop reading dumb books, then! :) I'm sure you've come accross one of the two geniuses in century past, i.e. Wittgenstein. why don't you cull some wisdom therefrom, Joyful bastard, like I have. I maintain: you are well liked. 9:13 PM

Psychoanalysis is maligned because it purports to access non-observable, introspective thought patterns. Since these thoughts are not always exhibited in behavior, they are assumed by 21st century minds to be non-existent. But, if they are real mental processes, how else could they be known unless they are somehow exhibited through a patient's speech? Did I cull that visdom from Vittgenschtein? Vas Vittgy vell liked? 9:07 PM

Leo Baeck Institute
For the first time, Britain's leading institutions for the study of German-speaking Jewry and the Holocaust have combined to present a programme of public lectures.
Drawing on the strengths of these three renowned institutions, the lectures pose a series of probing questions: How did Jews in the aftermath of the Shoah deal with feelings of revenge? In what ways does the concept of trauma help us to understand the life of individual survivors? How did Christians and Jews live together in a German city between 1933-1945? What can we say about coercion and consent during the Third Reich? Programme The Wiener Library
, founded in 1933, is Britain's largest documentation centre for the study of the Nazi era, the Shoah and the historical consequences of the attempted annihilation of Europe's Jewry.

The Question of Karl Kraus
“A liberated woman,” said Karl Kraus, “is a fish that has fought its way ashore.” Even at the time, there were women, some of them among his cheer-squad of beautiful mistresses, who thought he was talking through his hat. Agree with him or not, however, you wouldn’t mind being able to say something that sharp. Kraus was famous for being able to do so whenever he wanted, but eventually, as with his hero Oscar Wilde, his fame as a wit was there instead of the full, complex, tormented and deeply contemplative man. As a writer and practitioner of the higher journalism, he is still up there with all the other great names of literary Vienna – Arthur Schnitzler, Robert Musil, Joseph Roth – but up there for what, precisely? The risk run by the aphorist is that people will grow restless between aphorisms, because they aren’t getting enough of what it says on the label. Even while he was alive, most people didn’t want any more of Kraus’s world view than would fit into a fortune cookie. Though he had no computer on his desk, Kraus was essentially a blogger before the fact: his basic technique was to write a couple of hundred words about something silly in the newspaper. He sometimes wrote at length, but his admirers preferred him to keep it short. The kind of thing they liked best from him might have been designed to pop up on a Blackberry today. “An aphorism can never be the whole truth,” he once wrote: “It is either a half-truth or a truth and half.” Yes, but that’s an aphorism. So is it true?
