$19.95 (cloth) Order About the Book
Letters from Kiev Expertly translated by Myrna Kostash, the text is fully annotated for the Western reader by Dr. Bohdan Krawchenko , to whom Solomea Pavlychko originally wrote her letters. Also included are a number of memorable pictures of the crisis by Ukrainian photographers. Note: This book was edited and printed before the government of independent Ukraine officially adopted "Kyiv" as the English-language spelling of Ukraine's capital. Until that time "Kiev" was the accepted English-language spelling in scholarly publications, including those of the CIUS Press. Unfortunately, that spelling is still used by many publishers, newspapers, and magazines. CIUS Press, however, has used "Kyiv," "Odesa," and Ukrainian transliterations of Ukraine's place-names in its publications since 1993. Preview this Publication

What to Wear? : Using Fashion to Explore the Canadian Immigrant Experience in No New Land
By Shannon Hare
M.G Vassanji explores the relationship between dress and Canadian identity in his thought-provoking novel No New Land Making a Difference 355) and explores a very specific south-Asian African Canadian identity by fictionalizing a small immigrant community living in the suburbs of Toronto. Finding a position within a social group, coming to terms with the pressures of existing in an unfamiliar environment and accepting the inequalities of class are all concerns of No New Land. Analysing fashion choices may initially seem like a minor matter compared to these broader themes; the process of dressing- and disguising, however, should be considered in conjunction with these significant issues. No New Land. Making No New Land to describe the clothing of various characters and to capture the sense of unease connected with appearance and dress. In No New Land External appearance and internal cultural identity is addressed as the characters of No New Land are repeatedly judged by their appearance and dress. Vassanji makes the reader aware of his/her own gaze through a particularly voyeuristic description as he writes:

Performance and Memory The Trans-canada Highway And The Jumping Pound Grade Separator, Alberta
Author Stephanie White University of Calgary swhite@ucalgary.ca R©sum© Abstract The building of the Trans-Canada Highway (1949-1961) was a nationalist exercise spurred by forecasts of increased road links with the United States for trade and tourism, and undertaken in the postwar climate of the Cold War. It is an object of national unity coordinated by the provinces, illustrating how a federal government policy was enacted on a series of local sites, by provincial governments often historically suspicious of federal intentions. Besides the road surface itself there are a certain number of attendant structures: bridges, overpasses, tunnels and lay-bys. These were designed and constructed locally (provincially in rural areas, municipally when the Trans-Canada Highway crossed a city) according to Trans-Canada Highway Act guidelines. The building of the Trans-Canada Highway and the engineering works along its route collectively form a piece of material culture very much a product of its time.

The project comprises twenty per cent of the grade for Sociology 211. a. Report on media and ethnicity If you select this option, your task is to prepare a report concerning media treatment of an issue or issues related to ethnicity or multiculturalism. Any one or more of print (newspapers or magazines), radio, television, film, or video could be form of media you examine. Choose an issue, program, or set of advertisements early in the semester and follow this through the semester, keeping notes or records of what you see, read, and hear. Near the end of the semester, write a summary report of seven to ten pages describing the issue and analyzing how the media have dealt with the issue. If you have extra materials such as tables, detailed notes on programs, or clippings, these could be added as an appendix in addition to the seven to ten pages. Use the concepts and discussion in the two texts as a guide to analyzing the issue.

John Paskievich is a freelance photographer and filmmaker who immigrated to Montréal from Austria in 1953. In 1959 his family relocated to Winnipeg. Paskievich studied sociology and anthropology as an undergraduate student at the University of Winnipeg. It was only after a trip to Europe following his graduation that he discovered he might prefer photography, playing the role of the photo-snapping tourist both at home and abroad. He enrolled as a photography student at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto, and in 1978 received nationwide attention in Canada for his first solo show, A Place Not Our Own . This series of seventy-one black and white photographs is an exploration of the North End of Winnipeg, an area where large populations of European immigrants and First Nations of Canada mingle. Paskievich has described both groups as strangers, the Europeans strangers in a new land, the Native peoples strangers in their own land. In 1980 the artist travelled to Europe to amass a collection of images of the people of the Eastern Bloc, a personal pilgrimage that resulted in the show
