    Jerzy Kosinski:
    Writing by Chance and Necessity
    By William Gallo
LIKE ALL OF JERZY KOSINSKI'S protagonists, George Levanter bristles with contradiction and ambiguity. Coursing through the velvet-lined hell of Kosinski's sixth novel, Blind Date , Levanter blackmails a powerful captain of industry through a simple ruse and is in turn tricked into a woman's messy divorce proceeding by a small town police chief.
Morally outraged, he assassinates a pair of fascist thugs in the Swiss Alps, then escapes death himself when a luggage mixup in New York prevents him from being at the Bel Air home of Sharon Tate the night of the Manson killings
George Levanter turns the machinery of the Russian military to his advantage but later is turned inside out by a pair of temptresses- one a cunning prostitute, the other a dazzling transsexual.
A self-proclaimed "small investor" moving through a chance universe, Levanter is at once victim and oppressor, tool and manipulator. For him chance is sometimes a benefactor, sometimes "the ultimate terrorist." His "blind dates" -financial, moral, sexual, political- are with destiny itself. George Levanter seems to embody the wit and folly and irony of our century. AND WHO IS HIS CREATOR , Jerzy Kosinski? A simple information file:

Description The late Kosinski (1933-1991), author of such novels as The painted bird and Being there , was the subject of divided critical opinion because of the experimental nature of his writings and his use of radical subject matter. The range of critical response is in evidence in this carefully annotated b

Being There
Author Info: Jerzy Kosinski
Though it's something of a one-trick pony and now widely acknowledged to have been plagiarized from a Polish novel of the 1920's, The Career of Nikodem Dyzma by Tadeusz Dolega-Mostowicz, there are still a couple of worthwhile messages in this slender fable. Chance the gardener has never left the grounds of the estate where he works. He never knew his parents and hardly has any contact with his wealthy employer, the Old Man. The only other human contact he's really ever had was with housekeepers. So everything he knows about life and the world outside the garden he has learned by watching endless hours of television. Then one day the Old Man dies, Chance can't prove to the lawyers that he was actually employed by the Old Man, and he's unceremoniously turned out of the house. Almost immediately, he is struck by the chauffer-driven car of Elizabeth Eve "EE" Rand, who takes him home to be tended to by the same doctors who are caring for her much older husband. As might be expected from one who has led a hermit-like existence, Chance has pretty limited social skills. All he really knows to do are to talk about the garden and to try to imitate things he's seen on TV, which actually works out quite well : Thinking that he ought to show a keen interest in what EE was saying, Chance resorted to repeating

    Titels van Jerzy Kosinski
Laatst gewijzigd op 17 januari 1999 Title
    Cockpit
    Title explanation
The title means literally 'a pit or enclosed place for cockfights'. In Kosinski's vision it stands for human society, where people senselessly fight each other to the death. As the same time the title says something about the situation of Tarden, who thinks of himself as moving through space, invading other people's "areas" as if sitting in the cockpit of a private aircraft, isolated from them all, controlling everything from his instrument panel.
    Genres
The book contains to a lot of genres (according to my "reading help"), but I think that it's most a spy-thriller which criticises the moral and methods of secret services on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

Facts and Fakes
Considering Eliot Weinberger's Genuine Fakes
by
M.A.Orthofer
I.
Eliot Weinberger's short piece, Genuine Fakes , most recently published in his collection Karmic Traces (New Directions, 2000), begins: About ten years after it was published, an energetic young man retyped Jerzy Kosinski's 1965 prize-winning novel, The Painted Bird , gave the manuscript a new title, and submitted it to a dozen American publishers. None of them, including Kosinski's own publisher, recognized the book, and all of them rejected it. "It was good joke," Weinberger adds, "and a telling comment on how books get published, but the story does not end there." Indeed not. But the story also begins elsewhere.
II.
In his piece Weinberger offers a simplified account of the joke: a nameless energetic young man, an unidentified new title, faceless publishers. He even begins with an approximation: "About ten years after it was published ....." The anecdote the point perhaps does not require more.
The facts have been well-documented elsewhere.
