    Abstract
The author of this paper defends this novel by Jerzy Kosinski , so often attacked and ridiculed by critics, and hails it as a classic work of art of supreme historical value.
    From the Paper
Before beginning, however, a few comments on this controversial novel are important leading into the discussion. First of all, it is impossible to read The Painted Bird without feeling strong emotions and asking difficult questions: Could such a story really be true? If it is true, how can people treat other humans in this way? Are there still people in the world like this, seemingly without traditional values or morality? In a similar cultural setting, would I act in the same way? The characters in The Painted Bird demonstrate the most incredible forms of inhumanity and amorality imaginable and the story of the boy's experiences are at times beyond belief. Second, this book has been called everything from a classic of literature (for its portrayal of the horrors of war from the eyes of an innocent child) to an outrageous fabrication (written by a pathological liar and apologist for the Nazis).

In this, murder is the ultimate negation, for it genuinely devolves a thing from a human being. last will For the protagonist of Steps suicide is an act of the present. In performing it a man chooses to escape from his future and from his past, thus overcoming the knowledge that he will die. behaves in scenes For the protagonist of Steps memories carry no emotions: they exist as incidents, as concise dramas. He does not remember ( i.e. Steps emotions have no memories: they exist only in the present. When he reads emotion into memory, he is acting in the present, spontaneously filling in the structures of the drama with feeling (this is similar to what one does when engrossed in a play or in music). Thus he is revisiting the present. Deliberately to choose as a victim an individual or a group with a definable past to eliminate spontaneity from murder, surpasses in its impersonality even ritual killing, since it is devoid of emotion. Rational murder is the ultimate anti-theatre. Theatre implies agon , a struggle between two forces; it is essentially two-sided because it depicts the struggle within an intimate relationship. Massacre, then, is also ultimate anti-theatre; the holocaust (one- sided horror) is contrary to the ultimate theatre, to truly emotional killing.

At one time he was one of the most promising writers on the American scene, pounding out three hits in a row-the cult classic The Painted Bird, Steps (winner of the 1969 National Book Award), and Being There (filmed in 1980 with Peter Sellers in the starring role). With their grisly violence and a sexuality bordering upon the sadomasochistic, the books raised Kosinski into the ranks of America's celebrity class. He appeared repeatedly on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, played the role of Lenin's stooge Grigory Zinoviev in Warren Beatty's film

He loved to tell outrageous lies, particularly to the rich, intellectual and famous. They were so eager to be entertained, he explained, that they willingly suspended disbelief, and they were so confident of their superiority that they deserved to be played for fools. "Court jester" to his powerful American friends, that's how Jerzy Kosinski sometimes referred to himself. Even the truths of Kosinski's life are astonishing in their variety and complexity. Though he was never the mute, brutalized child hero of "The Painted Bird," he probably really did escape being killed in Sharon Tate's house the night of the Manson murders because, according to James Park Sloan, he missed his plane to Los Angeles. A skilled photographer, Kosinski really was invited by the dying Nobel Prize-winning French biochemist Jacques Monod to document his final hours, although we are not told what Monod expected him to do with the photographs. And after arriving as a penniless foreigner to go to graduate school at Columbia, Kosinski really did live out the American dream, marrying a millionaire socialite (from whom he was subsequently divorced, and who later committed suicide), earning national awards and huge sums of money for his books and a screenplay, on the way achieving that greatest of dreams, to be a movie star, playing a small but important role role in "Reds."

    N O N F I C T I O N JERZY KOSINSKI:
    A BIOGRAPHY
By James Park Sloan, Dutton, 506 pages.
S ay what you will about Jerzy Kosinski's fiction, his life was undeniably fascinating most often made so by his own diligent and inventive hustling. If you accepted Kosinski's own account, you believed he survived a childhood in war-torn Poland, where he was separated from his parents, on the run from Nazi occupiers and so horribly abused by local peasants that he was, for a time, struck dumb. After emigrating to the U.S. in the late fifties, he swiftly published two works of socio-political nonfiction, then broke through with "The Painted Bird," a novel he strongly suggested was based on his wartime autobiography. Eight other novels followed, including the 1969 National Book Award-winning "Steps" and later "Being There." Kosinski's fame arrived at a time when the Jet Set was just reaching cruising altitude; he became an enthusiastic frequent flyer. He displayed his considerable gifts as a raconteur on "The Tonight Show," and partied endlessly with the biggest names in the Lit crowd. He dabbled in movies (playing Lenin's pal Zinoviev in "Reds") and politics. And he took pleasure in spreading tales of his dark side: Kosinski the Master of Disguise prowling Manhattan's underworld at night, reveling in the sex clubs that flourished in the days when sex didn't have to be safe, just fun. But as James Park Sloan recounts in his new biography, Kosinski's frantic life hid a secret: he did not, strictly speaking, write his books by himself. When The Village Voice published, in 1982, the revelation that Kosinski had for years been discretely employing "editors" to polish his poorly written first drafts, his reputation was forever tarnished. Further investigation revealed that Kosinski had the bad manners to pay his collaborators poorly; that his waif-on-the-run story had been taken from, among other sources, the real life of his fellow Pole Roman Polanski; and that he had largely cribbed the plot of "Being There" from a Polish novel of the 1930s. Kosinski limped along, a vastly diminished figure on the edge of his former world, until his suicide in 1991.

    The Kosinski-Czaplinski Interviews
    Kosinski's Passions
Commentary by Edmond Darboski During the years 1988-1991 Czeslaw Czaplinski, a Polish born photographer who was on friendly terms with Jerzy Kosinski, conducted a series of interviews in the Polish language with the controversial author. It turned out to be the one (and only!) opportunity where Kosinski had a chance to talk at length about his interests. Acting against past precedent, he authorized the publication of these interviews. The book, KOSINSKI'S PASSIONS, was published in Poland in the Polish language (as PASJE JERZEGO KOSINSKIEGO) in 1993 and was an immediate smash hit, but American publishers - for some unknown reason - have shown only passing interest in the already completed translation. Certainly, James Park Sloan's biography "Jerzy Kosinski" broke no new ground in illuminating Kosinski's complicated character. Little more than a rehash of the same old stuff we've read elsewhere, larded with references to Jerzy's mother's "pendulous breasts" and speculation about a possible Oedipus complex, it hardly constitutes scholarly research. Meanwhile, the speculation goes on and Jerzy has been muffled up because no one will take a chance on publishing what could possibly be an original and interesting book.
