Older Fiction Realistic Fiction Capricorn Anderson is a 13-year-old homeschooled kid from an alternative farm commune. The commune was comprised of several families in the old days, but now there’s only Cap and his 67-year-old grandmother, Rain. That’s the problem. Rain breaks her hip and is hospitalized. Cap needs to go to temporary foster care and public school. Imagine a kid like Cap, with his long, un-groomed hair, hippie beads, hemp clothes, cornhusk sandals, tai chi practice out on the lawn, no familiarity with television, telephones, school lockers, lunchrooms, pizzas, and more, showing up at your middle school all of a sudden. He becomes an immediate target of derision. Zach Powers is “Mr. Popularity” and sets up Cap to become 8 th Posted by: Fran D.

    Schooled by Gordon Korman
Cap (short for Capricorn) is an 8th grader who has spent his life in a 1960s-style commune living only with his Grandmother. He's never had a friend his own age or watched TV or gone to school or done anything that most other kids have done. When his Grandma is injured, he is sent to live with a "normal family" and to go to public school. Right away the popular (but mean) guy in school pegs him for the biggest loser in the 8th grade. And at this middle school the tradition is to elect that loser class president in order to humiliate him. But Cap is so oblivious they can't figure out how to embarrass him. It's a light-hearted, funny book where the so-called loser ends up on top. In a way, this book is Stargirl for guys. I'm a big fan of Gordon Korman, and while I don't think it's his best book ever, I think lots of middle schoolers will enjoy this book. Book Review By Me: Schooled by Gordon Korman
The librarian at our school handed me this and said I'd like it. She was right.
Schooled is told in multiple 1st person POV, so the reader still gets inside everyone's head, a bit like Dracula, but on a kid-friendly level.
The basic plot is that Capricorn Anderson has been raised by his hippy grandmother, Rain, on what's left of a commune/farm for his whole life until Rain breaks her hip and Cap has to live with a social worker and go to a middle school for a couple of months. All the cruelties of junior high are sharply outlined because they are completely and totally new to Cap, who handles everything just fine.
Parts of the plot are completely unbelievable (the principal actually gives Cap blank checks to pay for the Halloween dance! As if!!! and Rain's attitude change at the end is way too fast to be acceptable), but other parts are oh-so-very-true (the bully, the nerd, the wannabe girlfriend). And almost all of it is delightfully funny.
The subplots of the family with whom Cap lives are subtle and work very nicely.

October 16, 2007 by Kate Hall This book reminds me off Stargirl except Cap is like a time traveler and is completely clueless to the world around him (including spitballs).  I liked it tremendously even if at times I wanted to shake him and make him see the world around him.  This would make for a great book discussion book because it touches on so many issues and yet tells a heartwarming tale.    Posted in children's 8th grade commune crush ... The Age of ?
A research project exploring the relationship between young adult literature and the contemporary world.

Kidnapped: Book One: The Abduction, by Gordon Korman
In the young adult literature business, and in the book business generally, books labeled as "popular fiction" have a hard time earning the respect of reviewers and critics. Fortunately for the authors, they usually do pretty well with consumers, who tend to purchase them at greater rates than other forms of literature.
The main complaint about these books is that they are mere "entertainment," with little redeeming social value.
Reading the first book in the Kidnapped adventure series, The Abduction, by Gordon Korman , reminds me of this recurring, dismissive response to popular literature. After finishing The Abduction, I noticed that even though I had been asked to review this book by Signal , a reputable journal in the field of young adult literature, this book is not listed anywhere on the 2007 YALSA book lists and awards that I am reading for this project.
I don't question leaving this book off of the YALSA booklists, even though it would be an excellent book to read with "reluctant" young adult readers, especially in grades 5-7. This is certainly the perogative of the YALSA reviewers. I do question, however, the notion that this book is mere entertainment. In addition to having some fine writing and action, the book supplies useful insightas perhaps other adventure books do tooon the current age in which we live.
