The Korman Invasion, Cont.
Why did Gordon Korman lose his touch?
This question is probably not hugely important to you unless you were a kid in Ontario in the mid-to-late 1980s. But for those of us who answered to that description, Gordon Korman was huge the biggest, best name in funny, non-preachy, funny , crazy, and just damn FUNNY novels. When I was in fifth grade, the kids in my English class were given a chance to vote on which authors should be assigned for a reading project; the winners were Gordon Korman and Roald Dahl (the latter choice influenced in part by a teacher who kept reading us "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar" over and over). In 1988, when Korman came to the Arts Alive festival in Ottawa to promote his new Bruno and Boots book, The Zucchini Warriors , kids were so tightly packed into the room where he was speaking that there was serious talk of seating a few of us on the ceiling. It was the first time I ever lined up to get an autograph, and I was so proud to have a new book signed by my favorite author.
Korman was one of the few kids' writers who knew what kids really liked to read in part because he started writing when he was a kid himself. His first novel

Schooled by Gordon Korman
Imagine a boy who has no clue what the world is like being suddenly transplanted into middle schoolit seems like an instant recipe for disaster! Capricorn Anderson has been raised on a farm commune by his grandmother, Rain, who has homeschooled him up in a very idealistic hippie style. He has no experience with the current world or even most modern conveniences. However, when Rain has a serious accident, Cap is forced to attend the local middle school until she recovers. His weird, hippie clothing, bushy hair, and complete lack of street smarts make him an immediate shoe-in as the nerdiest kid in school, which earns him the title of class president. Far from being an honor, this position targets the recipient with the worst attention possible. Read Schooled to find out how Cap's story ends!
This is an excellent story that is quirky, tender, and downright hilarious. Although it might be likened to a male version of the book "Stargirl," I found "Schooled" to be even better. The change of first person narrative from Capricorn to various classmates and other characters was wonderful. Boys and girls both will enjoy this tale of an eccentric individual and the people whose lives he changes. Posted by curlyq at 12:45 PM

Schooled by Gordon Korman
Korman has done it again! A thoroughly delightful story, implausible, but still lots of fun. Cap (Capricorn) Anderson has been homeschooled by his hippie grandmother in a commune outside of San Francisco, but is forced into public middle school when his grandmother breaks her hip. He immediately becomes a target because of his long hair, tie-dyed wardrobe and homemade sandals. Without his knowledge or consent he is nominated and elected eight grade class president, an office that has traditionally been reserved for the biggest nerd in school. Cap wins the hearts of the C Average Middle School students through his inherent kindness and innocence. Like a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, Cap gets along despite his fish out of water status. Fans of Son of the Mob and Born to Rock will eat this one up! Check out Schooled in Infosoup! A MESSAGE FROM GORDON KORMAN
I wrote The 6th Grade Nickname Game because grade six was the only year I had a cool nickname. Face it, there aren't a lot of good nicknames for Gordon. People usually called me Gordie or Gord-o. One very long semester I remember answering to Corny Korman. (That's not my favourite memory.)
But in grade six, I was the G-Man. I loved it! I've spent twenty-three years waiting to get another nickname that cool.
So when I came up with the idea of super-nicknamers Wiley and Jeff. I instantly put them in the sixth grade. They nickname everybody - Christie Jones is Krusty Bones; the class burp-aholic is called Gasbag; the teacher with the four-inch high-heeled shoes is known as Skywalker. Even Old Orchard Public School gets a nickname: OOPS - its initials.
Mr. Hughes, their teacher, is an ex-football coach - 280 pounds of pure muscle and brawn. It takes about five seconds for Wiley and Jeff to give him his new title - Mr. Huge!
There's always a little bit of real life behind my storylines.

As the teen librarian here at the Pawtucket Public Library (Pawtucket, RI) I talk to the kids who come in the library, help them find books, suggest stuff to read and plan programs. Of course I'm not always at the desk so the blog is a way to still get the word out on what's happening in the library, what I'm reading and what's new.

Born to Rock by Gordon Korman
You know it's a good book when you can't put it down and you read half of it in one day, right? Well that's what reading Born to Rock by Gordon Korman is like...I picked up the advance reading copy of this book at the Public Libraries Association conference in March. I was drawn to it by the cover which shows a baby with its hair in a mohawk!
The premise is that Leo Caraway doesn't find out until he is 17 that his biological dad is a famous punk rock musician from the 80s. He wouldn't even care about finding out about him because he loves his dad and doesn't want to upset his mom but he needs money to finance his college education at Harvard!
So he gets to know his "bio dad" by going on tour with him over the summer as a roadie! Read this book, you won't be disappointed!

Korman, Gordon. Jake, reinvented - Brief Article - Young Adult Review - Book Review
Kliatt Jan, 2004 by Paula Rohrlick Hyperion. 213p. c2003. 0-7868-1957-X. $15.99. S In this homage to The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald High has a new student, Jake Garrett, who throws the best parties and is considered the coolest guy in town. He dresses like "he'd just waltzed off the pages of the J. Crew catalog," he drives a Beamer, and he gets off football snaps "like a cruise missile." Every guy wants to be invited to his bashes, and every girl wants to be with him, but he only wants drop-dead gorgeous Didi, the girlfriend of Todd, the school quarterback. Narrator Rick tells the tragic tale as Jake manages to gets together with the girl of his dreams, though she refuses to stop seeing Todd. When violence erupts at a dangerously over-the-top final party, Jake takes the fall for Didi. In the end he is exposed as a lovelorn poseur, a former math geek and term paper writer for cash who has remade his image and plotted for years to win the prize of Didi, only to see it all slip away.

Korman, Gordon. The island [series]. Scholastic, 2001 1: Shipwreck [0-439-16456-7], 2:Survival [0-439-16457-5], 3: Escape [0-439-16452-4]
Six kids who are in trouble with the law (or other situations) are sent on a 4 week cruise from Guam run by a group hoping to turn their bad ways around. The sailing ship encounters a typhoon and sinks, the captain is killed and the first mate takes off with the lifeboat. After a terrible time alone at sea, the six kids end up on a tiny uncharted island. Here they have to survive but a group of murderous criminals also use the island from time to time. The kids find a tiny and mysterious World War II air base on the island. One kid gets shot in the leg. Should they try to take out the bullet? Will the group of criminals find them and kill them? Does anyone else think they are alive? This set of approximately 130 page books could have been made into one suspenseful book. The print is large so it would have fit nicely in a 200/250 page book. The series weaves a great tale and would make a great high interest series approachable to many kids from maybe 3rd to 7th grade.
