Yusef Komunyakaa, Talking Dirty to the Gods
Reviewed by Michael Graber
Yusef Komunyakaa, Talking Dirty to the Gods usef Komunyakaa is our poet of paradoxes. Alternatively street-wise yet academic, folkloric yet urbane, detached yet innerving, backwoods yet classical, his poetry displays the richest kind of cultural cross-fertilization that exemplifies what it means to live in our era. Talking Dirty to the Gods , he remains king of "Praising Dark Places," to take a title and theme from a poem in his previous Pulitzer Prize and Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award winning collection, Neon Vernacular In Talking Dirty to the Gods Dream Songs ), which serve as a culminating meditation on life, death, sex, desire, and the roots of human grief and joy. Taken together, this volume is a collision where high-born classical and theological references parade on Bourbon Street with all the showmanship and coquetry of a pageant-winning drag queen. This clash reminds readers that the sacred arrives uncensored, existing in the most baffling profane situations. Take the seeming innocent sport of fishing for a representative example. In the first six lines of Komunyakaa's "The Lure," the poet explores the sexy shadow of fishing in luscious detail: The batfish hides there At the bottom of desire. A fleshy, wormlike lure Dangles freely, luminescent As a French tickler or line From a love song personified.

The common theme in yusef komunyakaa’s poems is the Vietnam War. He focuses more on the experience of it, rather than the reasons for the war itself.

Shangri La in New York (Yusef Komunyakaa and Susie Ibarra)
April 16 Yusef Komunyakaa and Susie Ibarra @ The Kitchen
I’ll start by saying I am lucky to have workshopped with Komunyakaa on two occasions: once in a one-day workshop at Duke and once in a one-day workshop at Cave Canem . At Duke, he struck through our words to put together phrases in a way that should have made non-sensical arrangements but instead made phrases that made more sense. They were images that were born of sound in that they seemed to create new images by merging them (in sound) rather than to clarify the images the writers seemed to be painting. In Durham Poetry Speak (or in my own small circle with amazing poets Evie Shockley and Christian Campbell ) this action became known as Komunyakaafication. Workshopping would then produce notes on our poems that began: "If you will allow me to Komunyakaafy these lines, perhaps you could try . . ." I’ll also say that the experience of having heard Komunyakaa has helped me hear and seek out other rhythms in my own work that I’m so happy to have. So I was really excited to hear his work as music. The project was a work in progress called Shangri-La.

Yusef Komunyakaa April 2006 Blue Notes, They look like wood ibis
They became knots left for gods
To undo, like bows tied
At the center of weakness.
Shadow to light, mind to flesh,
Swamp orchids quivered under green hats,
Nudged by slate-blue catfish
Gods lived under that mud Blind. Each bloom a shudder Of uneasiness, no sound Except the whippoorwill.

Ode to the Maggot Brother of the blowfly Over battlefields, In slabs of bad pork Go to the root of all things. Jesus Christ, you're merciless Behind the stone door of Caesar's tomb Or split trench in a field of ragweed. No degree or creed can outlaw you As you take every living thing apart. Poem Of The Week Yusef Komunyakaa Believing In Iron
To discover how the world worked.
We could look at a tree of blackbirds
But with the scrap dealer
Our math was always off.
Never added up to much,
Believing in iron.
Were held to the ground
By thick, nostalgic fingers of vines
Strong as a dozen sharecroppers.
Groaning under a new load, Yet tiger lilies lived better In their languid, August domain. Foundry smoke erased sunsets, Left men bent so close to the earth As if the ore under their breath Weighed down the gray sky. Sometimes I dreamt how our hills Washed into a sea of metal, How it all became an anchor For a warship or bomber Out over trees with blooms Too red to look at. Slamdunk Insignia on our sneakers, We outmaneuvered the footwork Of bad angels. Nothing but a hot Swish of strings like silk Ten feet out. In the roundhouse Labyrinth our bodies Created, we could almost Last forever, poised in midair Like storybook sea monsters. A high note hung there A long second. Off
