Camouflaging the Chimera We tied branches to our helmets. with mud from the riverbank, blades of grass hung from our pockets of our tiger suits. We wove ourselves into the terrain, content to be a hummingbird’s target. against a breeze off the river, slow-dragging with ghosts from Saigon to Bangkok, with women left in doorways reaching in from America. We aimed at dark-hearted songbirds. In our way station of shadows rock apes tried to blow our cover, throwing stones at the sunset. Taboo by Yusef Komunyakaa
Nathanielturner.com Yusef Komunyakaa has nothing to prove. With a Pulitzer Prize under his belt for a decade, a teaching position at Princeton University, rambling lists of poetry prize credits, and the Bronze Star for his correspondent work in Vietnam, Komunyakaa certainly commands a bit of respect. It is curious, then, that his most recent collection does not appear to be generating much interesting conversation. I admit that my research was confined to Internet sources I was looking for some information about The Wishbone Trilogy at large, of which Taboo Taboo Taboo Herodotus, woven into his story,

door opened . . . These are the very first words of the collection. Note the short, packed lines. And the discombobulating line breaks. There is something so lovely, though, about the harshness. Komunyakaa channels Emily Dickinson here, but without the sudden self-reproach that erupts from a more inhibited voice. The poet in these jerky breaks and lickety-split movements speaks with a panting confidence, ala Buffy the Vampire Slayer punning it up with the demons. ...There is a reason why the dead

Pleasure Dome gathers over twenty-five years of work, including early uncollected poems and a rich selection of new poems. Best known for Neon Vernacular , which won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1994, and for Dien Cai Dau Pleasure Dome Pleasure Dome includes 25 early, uncollected poems and a rich selection of 18 new poems. "Komunyakaa certainly deserves this valedictory volume . . . [The new work] is really almost a short collection's worth of material. It's reminiscent of 1998's Thieves of Paradise with its heady mix of gothic foreboding, racial history and realpolitick, biblical and Attic allusion, and sexual longing . . . Most readers will want this book for its alternatingly erudite and feral energy and its truth-telling about Vietnam (see Dien Cai Dau and others) and America."— Publishers Weekly Pleasure Dome Virginia Quarterly Review "Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Komunyakaa's second book in less than a year attests to the protean nature of his poetic imagination and skills, his fluent creative energy, and his passion for living the examined life . . . Komunyakaa is emerging as one of the major American poets of our time."—
