The poet gives a reading at UC and the Main Public Library By John Stoehr Kenneth Koch
Kenneth Koch feels lucky he can write a lot of poetry. And write a lot, he does. After 21 volumes of poetry, three works of fiction, nine books of non-fiction, 21 avant-garde plays and parodies, and countless articles for newspapers and magazines, this 75-year-old Cincinnati native continues to write at a remarkable rate. As one of the founding members of the so-called New York school of poets in the 1950s, voluminous output seems only natural. And being prolific wasn't the only thing that came naturally: Innovation was what defined the New York school. The '50s was an era dominated by New Critical literary theory whose predominant figurehead was the draconian T.S Eliot, author of The Waste Land . Poetry, therefore, according to Koch, suffered from acute boredom and sterility, and Koch and other poets of his generation felt suffocated by the established poetic hegemony. So they forged technical and conceptual innovations to combat poetic tedium.

Help Title: Methods and compositions for on-line gas turbine cleaning Document Type and Number: United States Patent 7185663 Link to this page: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7185663.html Abstract: Methods and compositions for on-line cleaning of internal surfaces of selected sections of a hydrocarbon fuel burning gas turbine and associated heat recovery equipment, during operation. Cleaning solutions containing graphite and/or molybdenum-based particles and oil soluble corrosion inhibitors, aromatic solvents, and surfactants are selectively introduced directly into the combustion chamber (combustor) of the gas turbine, into the fuel stream, water washing system, or the combustion air system (hot gas path). The cleaning process dislodges unwanted ash deposit buildup and, thereby restores the gas turbine to rated power. When introduced into the compressor section, the particles impinge on the metal surfaces, cleaning them prior to entering the hot gas section where the process may be repeated. They may also be carried through the exhaust to additionally clean attendant heat recovery equipment, if present. Inventors: Koch, Kenneth W. (P.O. Box 841761, Houston, TX, US)

BoldType A Conversation with kenneth koch. An interview by Ernie Hilbert.
http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0400/koch/interview.html
ould you say a few words about New Addresses?
These poems seem to have taken on a certain inertia after a time. Did you begin to envision them as a single project?

After I talked to some of the subjects I mentioned, I thought that there were more important things for me to talk to than piano lessons. I wrote hundreds and hundreds of these poems. The ones in the book are the ones that worked out. There are several poems in the book that are addressed to more than one thing. At a certain point I realized that the things I was talking to in the poems weren't in my life separately, but together.
You mentioned the rhetorical form of apostrophe. Would you consider any of your poems odes?
Odes seem more celebratory. When John Donne writes "Death be not proud", that's not really an ode. When Shelley talks to the west wind that is an ode. It is a high level of praise. When Frank O'Hara talks to the sun on Fire Island, that is not an ode. Odes just seem a little highly toned.
What drew you to this form?
It's a rare example, for me anyway, of poetry coming from criticism. I became interested in this form when I was writing a book entitled

  • Buzzflash del.icio.us Digg Facebook ... Write to the Magazine "May I tell you how much I love your poems?" Frank O'Hara crowed in the first stanza of a tribute to his friend Kenneth Koch in 1953. "It's as if a great pipeline had been illicitly tapped/along which all personal characteristics/are making a hasty departure. Tuba? Gin?/...O Kenneth Koch!" Koch's memories of his writing methods at the time, which he described with typical exuberance in a poem of his own, confirm O'Hara's impression that he drew inspiration from nothing less than the entire world. "I'm excited I'm writing at my typewriter it doesn't make too much sense," he gushed, so thrilled to be putting words to paper he didn't even have a moment to spare for punctuation. Assuming his usual carefree poetic persona combined with just a dash of bemused self-mockery, Koch wrote about his creative process with the breathlessness of a man wholly in love with the universe.
