“Poetry presents the thing
in order to convey the feeling
It should be precise about the thing
and reticent about the feeling, for
as soon as the mind connects with the thing
the feeling shows in the words;
this is how poetry enters deeply into
us. ”

“Poetry?!?” “I hate it” “It’s okay.” “I like it . . .” Those are only a few of the usual responses teachers receive when they mention the word ‘poetry’ to their class. Regardless of their age, many children don’t particularly care for it unless they have been exposed to and have had a positive experience with poetry. The reason is simple. I believe that they do no see poetry in relation to themselves or to their surroundings. To them it is another world. My Class I currently teach fifth and sixth grade special education students in a self-contained classroom. All of my students have been placed with me because of the difficulties they have experienced in the regular classroom. The reasons vary. They may be medical or emotional or have to do with the child’s past experiences which have interfered with their normal learning processes. My students present the following characteristics in my classroom:
-poor reading skills, word attack skills, word recognition, word identification

I had forgotten about Koch's comics, and the fact that they are funny. Perhaps someday someone will draw comparisons between Koch and Behrle. Though in terms of standing out amongst contemporaries, Behrle's poetry will most likely be of greater relevance than Koch's was. 1:02 PM, June 25, 2004

Abstract
Biography
Born on November 9, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, James Marcus Schuyler experienced a peripatetic childhood. His family lived for a time in Downer's Grove, a suburb of Chicago, then Washington, D.C., and later Chevy Chase, Maryland. His parents divorced early in Schuyler's childhood and he remained with his mother and step-father. At the age of twelve, his family moved to Buffalo, New York, and two years later to East Aurora, a suburb outside of Buffalo. Schuyler attended Bethany College in West Virginia from 1941 to 1943. There he pursued interests in history, architecture, and literature. During World War II, in 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy. He spent the next two years on a destroyer in the North Atlantic, protecting convoys. He remained in the Navy after the war. In 1947, Schuyler moved to the Isle of Ischia in Italy for two years. There he lived in the rented house of W.H. Auden, whom he had met in New York. Schuyler served as Auden's secretary, typing the manuscript for Auden's book Gnomes and Auden's translation of Jean Cocteau's "Les Chevaliers de la Table Ronde." Schuyler also attended the University of Florence at this time, and he began writing poetry. Although he returned to New York briefly, an inheritance allowed him the financial independence to return to Florence in mid-1950.

Introduction
In this paper, I would like to explore ways in which ventriloquism and puppetry can be integrated into a unit for teaching young children about poetry. As a key component to my unit, I would like to emphasize the active participation of children in using puppetry to read and discuss poetry, as well as, writing it. Focused activities will be implemented in the classroom throughout the school year, using puppetry and poetry as vehicles for the creation of opportunities to increase the use of reading and language arts. In addition, supplementary activities will be suggested for an eight to ten week after school program. My own family of puppets consists of ten relatively large stage size puppets. Most of my puppets were hand made in a studio and are approximately 20 to 36 inches in length. Many have striking characteristics with lively expressions, (e.g. Large noses, movable mouth parts and eyes, use of bright colors in their clothing or fur if they happen to be an animal.) (See bibliography section, “Additional Resources” for catalogue and ordering information.) I am a self-taught ventriloquist and have developed numerous programs which have been presented at schools, churches and at birthday parties throughout several states. The focus of these presentations has generally been entertainment or special themes. However, there is one area in my work that particularly intrigues me.
