    Plot Summary
Gene Forrester, the story's first person narrator, tells of his return to Devon, the stately New England school he attended fifteen years prior. As he walks the grounds he notes with disapproval that the buildings are now preserved with a glossy varnish, lending an unreal, museum-like quality to the campus. Looking back, Gene now understands something of the constant fear that he and his classmates endured then, living as draft-aged young men during the time of the Second World War. His memories heavy upon him, Gene slogs through muddy fields in pouring rain, arriving at a fog-shrouded river. There, he locates a significant tree from his youth, identifying it by certain scars on its trunk and by its one large branch, which stretches out over the water. Gene marvels at how this tree, which ... ( read more Chapter 1

"The great disjunction of the times, as we press toward equalization of access to vital services for all, and do this largely through taxation, is how are we simultaneously going to keep the idea in individuals' heads that they, individually, are going to make a difference? This is the major issue as numbers expand and there is a press toward the beneficent state. So we have the grand conflict between freedom, individualism, self-determination versus liberalism or equality, social justice, the good of the whole. Both are virtuous, but a healthy balance between them has never been more difficult to define and maintain." ON SERVING OTHERS. "I was brought up in a strong puritan tradition, which valued hard work and self-reliance, combined with the Calvinist approach to life, that you should put back into it more than you take out. If you have a good education and don't have to worry about money all the time, you have a special obligation to serve others . . . Though I'm no churchgoer now, I still consider myself a religious man. I particularly like Paul Tillich's definition of religion as a state of being grasped with an infinite concern. Because I am grasped with an infinite concern about where we've been, where we're going to be in the future."

notes
John and Sharon first met at a traditional music session in the Coylet Inn, Loch Eck, Argyll, Scotland. At that time, Sharon lived in a sixteenth century ferryman’s cottage in Ardentinny on the banks of Loch Long. Ferry Cottage, as it is known, became the site of many musical gatherings (ceilidhs) and inspired the composition of the final tune on the recording. These were wonderful times! John and Sharon are now part of the band Fynesound. Fynesound’s album Almost Home can also be found on this website. See also A Bird in the Wood, the solo album by Fynesound's singer, by Linda Rice-Johnston.
