Thinking about Etheridge Knight
I first met Etheridge Knight in the spring or early summer of 1976, probably at one of the weekly small and slightly rowdy gatherings of poets in the basement of the Pillsbury Waite Cultural Arts Center in Minneapolis. It was an old building, had previously been a church, it was a warm evening, and a little bit humid and sweaty even in the cool of the basement. Other regulars and semi-regulars at the weekly sessions included Roy McBride (a person of inexhaustible energy, and in my opinion the best poet in Minneapolis, a city teeming with poets), Jim Dochniak, Kevin O'Rourke, Linda Bryant, Mary McAnally, myself, Dale Handeen, Ruth Magler, Steve Linsner, Mike Finley, Ivory Giles, and one or two others.
I never got to know Etheridge well. His poetry planted astonishing flowers in me that continue to bloom to this day. At the time, he'd published

    nothing . Just grinned and look silly. His empty eyes like knot holes in a fence. And even after we discovered that it took Hard Rock Exactly 3 minutes to tell you his name, we told ourselves that he had just wised up, Was being cool; but we could not fool ourselves for long. And we turned away, our eyes on the ground. Crushed. He had been our Destroyer, the doer of things We dreamed of doing but could not bring ourselves to do. The fears of years like a biting whip, Had cut deep bloody grooves Across our backs. Submitted by Raine W. Added: Last Read: Viewed: 8210 times

Etheridge Knight (1931-1991)
Biography Etheridge Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi, in 1931. He dropped out of school at the age of sixteen and joined the military. While serving in Korea, he acquired a drug habit that followed him back to the states in 1951. In 1960, he was arrested for robbery and sentenced to eight years in the Indiana State Prison. It was here that Knight began writing poetry. He corresponded with other African American poets of the time like Dudley Randall and Gwendolyn Brooks. He published his first book of poetry, Poems From Prison (1968), while he was still incarcerated. His book was a success and afterward he became deeply involved in the Black Arts Movement. Knight's other books and presentations were both popular and critically acclaimed, and throughout his career he received honors from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Society of America. He was also one of five Tennessee writers featured in the Memphis Public Library's Talking Leaves video series. Knight earned a bachelor's degree in American poetry and criminal justice from Martin Center University in Indianapolis in 1990, but only one year later in 1991, he died of lung cancer.

The Idea of Ancestry
by Etheridge Knight Taped to the wall of my cell are 47 pictures: 47 black
faces: my father, mother, grandmothers (1 dead), grand-
fathers (both dead), brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts,
cousins (1st and 2nd), nieces, and nephews. They stare
across the space at me sprawling on my bunk. I know
their dark eyes, they know mine. I know their style,
they know mine. I am all of them, they are all of me;
they are farmers, I am a thief, I am me, they are thee. I have at one time or another been in love with my mother,
1 grandmother, 2 sisters, 2 aunts (1 went to the asylum),
and 5 cousins. I am now in love with a 7-yr-old niece (she sends me letters in large block print, and her picture is the only one that smiles at me). I have the same name as 1 grandfather, 3 cousins, 3 nephews, and 1 uncle. The uncle disappeared when he was 15, just took off and caught a freight (they say). He's discussed each year when the family has a reunion, he causes uneasiness in

2. Mainstream poets do what they will with haiku.
Mainstream Poets Do Write Haiku Moy Sand and Gravel Braided Creek appeared on the eve of his assuming the national post. Note that while Kooser in effect writes haiku, a previous poet laureate, Robert Hass retranslated and edited a substantial collection of Japanese haiku and related writings, The Essential Haiku Back Roads to Far Towns . In the meantime, recent poet laureate Billy Collins has taken up writing haiku, and will have a book of them published by Modern Haiku Press in the near future [ She Was Just Seventeen ], as Paul Muldoon [ Sixty Instant Messages to Tom Moore ] did not long ago. The Dharma Bums Braided Creek What Book!?
