Etheridge Knight was born to a poor rural family in Corinth, Mississippi on April 19 , in which he was but one of seven children. After attending school only until the completion of the 9th grade, Knight decided to drop out at the age of 14. At such a young age, he realized that without an education, his opportunities were limited. In his hometown, he could only find menial jobs such as shining shoes and spent much of his time in bars and pool halls. This took an emotional toll on Knight. Desperate to relieve himself of the despair of reality, he turned to narcotics such as marijuana and cocaine . In an attempt to find himself and a purpose in life Knight decided to join the U.S. Army

Etheridge Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi, in 1931. Although he dropped out of school at age fourteen, his education in the uses and joys of language continued as he explored the world of juke joints, pool halls, and underground poker games. He began to master the art of the toast, a form of long, improvised, humorous poetry that dates back to the 19th century and has its roots in African storytelling. From 1947 to 1951, Knight served in the U.S. Army in Korea, and returning with a shrapnel wound that caused him to fall deeper into a drug addiction that had begun in his youth. In 1960 he was arrested for robbery and sentenced to eight years in the Indiana State Prison. During this time he began writing poetry, and he corresponded with and received visits from such established African American literary figures as Dudley Randall and Gwendolyn Brooks Poems from Prison The book was a success, and Knight soon joined such poets as

Books by Etheridge Knight Poems from Prison Black Voices from Prison Belly Song and Other Poems Born of a Woman ... Essential Etheridge Knight Etheridge Knight Speaks Black Aesthetic I think the Black Aesthetic differs from the European Aesthetic mainly . . . because it does not separate art or aesthetics from the other levels of life. It does not separate art from politics, art from economics, art from ethics, or art from religion. Art is a functional and a commercial endeavor. The artist is not separate from the people. If you were to trace the separation of art from life historically, you would trace it back to the Greeks when Plato and others made the “head thing” the ideal—reasoning being the ideal—there was a separation between reason and emotion. There was a separation. It is like people trying to separate church and state. How in the hell can you separate church and state? A man’s politics is determined by how he views the world, how he sees God. Aesthetics, to me, means how one sees beauty, truth and love as they relate to all levels of life—not just watching the sunset, but how one’s politics are dealt with and how one’s economics are dealt with. All art stems basically from economics. All the Western dances and all the songs, that people call classical music grew out of formulas—European formulas.

  • Etheridge Knight 1931–1991
American poet, essayist, editor, and short story writer.
    INTRODUCTION
Knight was one of the most popular poets of the Black Arts Movement, a period during the 1960s of literary and cultural revival for black writers and artists. His work often protested the oppression of blacks and the underprivileged and reflected his experience as an inmate at the Indiana State Prison. He strove for a balance between "the poet, the poem, and the people," deliberately using direct language, slang, and simple poetic techniques to make his work accessible to the greatest possible number of readers.
    Biographical Information
Born in Corinth, Mississippi, in 1931, Knight dropped out of school after the eighth grade and began frequenting bars and poolrooms. At the age of sixteen Knight joined the United States Army; he served in Korea as a medical technician. During the war he began to use drugs, and by his discharge in 1957 he had become a drug addict, committing crimes to support his habit. In 1960 he was found guilty of armed robbery and sentenced to ten to twenty-five years in prison. While incarcerated, he published his first volume of poetry, Poems from Prison.

Etheridge Knight - (1931-1991) Nashville By Calisha Brooks
Tennessee State University, Tennessee I. Introduction Etheridge Knight's prison poetry, by means of its temporal/spatial references and movements, liberates the minds and spirits of his readers, and of his people as a whole. Knight was one of the most popular poets of the Black Arts Movement, a period during the 1960s of literary and cultural revival for black writers and artists. He began writing poetry when he was an inmate at the Indiana State prison. In many of his poems he expressed a desire for freedom and protested the oppression of blacks and the under privileged in "the bigger prison of society." He strove for a balance between "the poet, the poem, and the people." II. Biography Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi, and grew up in Mississippi and Paducah, Kentucky with four brothers and two sisters. Quitting school after the eighth grade, Knight did not finish because he wanted to run away from home instead. Later when he was seventeen years old, he joined the army disillusioned and got hooked. Knight served as a medical technical and saw active service in Korea where he received a "psyche, wound." In his book Born a Woman , Knight writes, "I died in Korea from a shrapnel wound, and narcotics resurrected me"(Knight 124). This resurrection led to what Knight called "another death." He was convicted of a 1960 robbery committed in Indianapolis, Indiana to support his drug habit. "I died in 1960 from a prison sentence and poetry brought me back to life" (Knight 180). In prison, Knight says he found a community and it was because of poetry that is what brought him into communion with other people.

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students often lack the knowledge of the new black aesthetic, the black oral tradition, and contemporary black poetry, in general. I lecture on major twentieth-century black poets and literary movements. In addition, I provide supplementary research articles, primarily from BALF Black American Literature Forum ) and CLA College Language Association Since Knight has read his poems on various college campuses throughout the country, I use tapes of his poetry readings. I also read his poetry aloud and invite students to do likewise, since his punctuation guides the reader easily through the oral poems. Students, black and white, identify with the intense pain, loneliness, frustration, and deep sense of isolation Knight expresses in his prison poetry. They often compare their own sense of isolation, frustration, and depression as college students with his institutional experience. Students often ask the following questions: 1. Why haven't they been previously exposed to this significant poet and to the new black aesthetic?

Knight earned a bachelor's degree in American poetry and criminal justice from Martin Center University in Indianapolis in 1990, but only one year later in 1991, he died of lung cancer.
