Also known as William of Normandy and William the Bastard, King William I of England was the illegitimate son of Duke Robert of Normandy, France. Though his blood claim to the throne of England was slim, he set his sights on the land once governed by his cousin, Edward the Confessor , and claimed the old king had named him his heir. In October of 1066, William the Conqueror successfully invaded England and defeated Harold Godwinson to win the crown.

    US History E-Text Colonial Wars
    King William's War (1690-1697)
King James II of England, unlike his profligate brother, Charles II, was extremely religious, and his religion was that of Rome. The large majority of the people of England were Protestants; but they would have submitted to a Catholic king had he not used his official power to convert the nation to Catholicism. From the time of James's accession, in 1685, the unrest increased, until, three years later, the opposition was so formidable that the monarch fled from his kingdom and took refuge in France. The daughter of James and her husband, the Prince of Orange, became the joint sovereigns of England as William and Mary. This movement is known in history as the English Revolution. Louis XIV, the king of France, was a Catholic and in full sympathy with James. Moreover, he denied the right of a people to change sovereigns, and espoused the cause of James; and war between the two nations followed. This war was reflected in America, as King William rejected an offer of colonial neutrality, and it is known as "King William's War." The English colonies had long watched the French encroachments on the north; the French determined to hold the St. Lawrence country, and to extend their power over the vast basin of the Mississippi; and each was jealoous of the other concerning the fisheries and the fur trade. To these differences must be added an intense religious feeling. The English colonies were almost wholly Protestant except Maryland , and even in Maryland the Protestants were in a large majority. New France was purely Catholic, and the two forms of Christianity had not yet learned to dwell together, or near together, in harmony. King James had not confined his designs to the home country; he had not only revoked some of the colonial charters and sent the tyrant Andros to domineer

Printable Brochure The King William District occupies land that was once irrigated farm land belonging to the Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo. When the mission was secularized in 1793, the lands were divided among the resident Indian families from the mission or sold at public auction. The area call the King William Neighborhood of today was subdivided into lots in the 1860s and laid out with the present streets. It was about this time that a great many Germans who had immigrated to Texas in the 1840s began to settle in this area and it became known as "Sauerkraut Bend" to the rest of San Antonio. It developed into an idyllic neighborhood of large, impressive houses shaded by enormous pecan and cypress trees. The main entry street into the area was given the name King Wilhelm in honor of King Wilhelm I, King of Prussia in the 1870s. During World War I, when America was at war with Germany, the name was changed to Pershing Avenue. A few years after the war was over the original name was restored, but this time it was given the English version of the name, King William, and it has remained so since. In the early 1900s the King William District began to wane as a fashionable neighborhood and by 1920 many of the original home builders died and their children moved to other parts of San Antonio. During the 1930s and 1940s the neighborhood declined and many of the fine old homes were converted into apartments and general deterioration set in throughout the area. Only a few of the earlier settlers remained and maintained earlier standards.

King William's War (1689-1697) was the first of what came to be known in America as the French and Indian wars. In fact, the French and Indian Wars were a series of colonial wars between Great Britain and France that lasted three-quarters of a century. Hostilities in King William's War begain in 1690, when in the course of a few months Schenectady, N.Y., was burned by the French and Indians, and colonial English forces launched attacks on Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal), Nova Scotia, and on Quebec. Despite further raids by the French and Indians, the war ended in a stalemate. The Treaty of Ryswick, by which were ended the war and its European counterpart, the War of the Grand Alliance restored all colonial possessions to their prewar status.
    • French and Indian forces from Montreal attacked and burned Schenectady, N.Y.
    • The city of Quebec was attacked by English forces in the first major military operation of King William's War. They were repulsed by the French under Louis de Baude, comte de Palluau et de Frontenac

For William's Geneology click here! Posthumous son of William II of Orange ruler of the United Netherlands. Married Mary daughter of James duke of York 1677 Short, asthmatic, stooped bad teeth and beaked nose. His family:Nassau was unhealthy and suffered from mysterious fevers of a tubeercular nature. Wiilliam was always weak and had a constant consumptive cough. His face was sullen and bloodless and scored with the deep lines which were the product of fighting ceaseles pain. He could not handle a horse or sword until full grown. His success in life came from the care he took to eat simply, drink little and obtain plenty of sleep. None the less he overcame all of these physical setbacks to present a dashing and inspiring figure on horseback in the thick of the fight. William II was obsessed with the destruction of Imperial France and the salvation of the Netherlands. As King William III of England he accomplished far more for the welfare of the English people than had most of his native-born predecessors. He removed the tyranny of games and reformed the nations political and financial institutions. His reign marked the transition from the personal government of the Stuarts to the parliamentary rule of the Hanoverians-control of the army was transferred to Parliament, a better system of finance was introduced and the Bank of England was established. The constitutioal rights of the people were set on a firmer basis. No matter what country was to deal with England they would deal with a constitutional monarchy after 1689 (for example Ireland-It was hard enough to win freedom from a constitutional monarchy for a republic-under the tyranny of an absolutist this would have been much more difficult as found the French who were forced to accomplish this with their bloody revolution)
