Everything You Need to Know About Writing Successfully - in Ten Minutes, by Stephen King
Mike Shea , 4 February 2005 "Everything You Need to Know About Writing Successfully - in Ten Minutes" by Stephen King (reprinted in Sylvia K. Burack, ed. The Writer's Handbook. Boston, MA: Writer, Inc., 1988: 3-9) I. The First Introduction THAT'S RIGHT. I know it sounds like an ad for some sleazy writers' school, but I really am going to tell you everything you need to pursue a successful and financially rewarding career writing fiction, and I really am going to do it in ten minutes, which is exactly how long it took me to learn. It will actually take you twenty minutes or so to read this essay, however, because I have to tell you a story, and then I have to write a second introduction. But these, I argue, should not count in the ten minutes. II. The Story, or, How Stephen King Learned to Write When I was a sophomore in high school, I did a sophomoric thing which got me in a pot of fairly hot water, as sophomoric didoes often do. I wrote and published a small satiric newspaper called The Village Vomit. In this little paper I lampooned a number of teachers at Lisbon (Maine) High School, where I was under instruction. These were not very gentle lampoons; they ranged from the scatological to the downright cruel. Eventually, a copy of this little newspaper found its way into the hands of a faculty member, and since I had been unwise enough to put my name on it (a fault, some critics argue, of which I have still not been entirely cured), I was brought into the office. The sophisticated satirist had by that time reverted to what he really was: a fourteen-year-old kid who was shaking in his boots and wondering if he was going to get a suspension ... what we called "a three-day vacation" in those dim days of 1964.

      Stephen King's Super-Duper Magical Negroes
      By Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu
25 October 2004 As I sat there listening to Barnes, I realized with dismay what bothered me about several of Stephen King's novels. Several of his greatest works hinge on Magical Negroes and, furthermore, the result was a propagation of racial stereotypes. To fully understand how deeply King's Magical Negroes affect, it's best to first look at the history of the Magical Negro. Sometimes called the "Magic Negro" or the "Mystical Negro," the term "Magical Negro" typically references characters in film and dates back to the 1950s, around the time of the film The Defiant Ones In this film, a white man named John "Joker" Jackson (played by Tony Curtis) and a black man named Noah Cullen (played by Sidney Poitier) are convicts on a southern chain gang. When they escape because of a bus accident, they make a run for it. The going is slow because they're shackled together by a thick chain and both are also full of racial assumptions. At first, they hate each other; they argue over which way to go and Joker's use of the word "nigger." But in the end, after many trials and tribulations, they become friends. When Cullen is able to jump on the moving train, Joker can't make it. Cullen then sacrifices his own freedom to help Joker. And so the first famous Magical Negro was born. Much more recently, in 2001, during a discussion with students at Washington State University, film director Spike Lee popularized the concept by renaming it the "Super-Duper Magical Negro." He was referring specifically to John Coffey (played by Michael Clarke Duncan) in

  • (Jan 18) New year, same site. Look for an updated look sometime soon! But the big news! Te new title of King's upcoming collection (due out this fall or next spring) is Unnatural Acts of Intercourse ... which I think is a few steps up from the weird Pocket Rockets . Yey King! This news, just four days before Duma Key is released ... plus, BIG NEWS: King is currently working on a "novel that's going to be very long." TERRIFIC NEWS!
  • Duma Key , and also win some really, really neat stuff. The press release: DUMA KEY is the story of Freemantle, a man who loses an arm in a freak accident and relocates to Duma Key, off the West Coast of Florida, to start a new life. In this wild, barren place, inspired by the sunsets he watches from his new home, Freemantle discovers a unique talent for painting. But his art becomes predictive, even dangerous, and his only option is to unlock the secrets that haunt Duma Key... This is a unique opportunity to be directly involved with the publication of one of the most anticipated novels of 2008, by one of the biggest authors in the world.

When Stephen King's book, On Writing, came out in October 2000, it was the talk of the publishing and the reading world. Everyone wanted to see what the prolific master of horror had to say about writing - especially after his car accident, which he openly admitted had temporarily paralyzed his inner muse. AuthorsOnTheWeb was curious as to what authors thought of King's book, so our Senior Writer Joe Hartlaub asked seven professional writers - from bestsellers to lesser-known authors - what they thought about the book and how their own writing style corresponds to King's. Join our round table discussion as we talk to the following authors about what they do best… Meet the Authors:

Stephen King: Waterboard Jenna Bush, Have Her Decide If It's Torture
Tuesday, November 27, 2007 Horror writer Stephen King has a solution for how to prove once and for all whether waterboarding is torture: Have Jenna Bush try it. The bestselling author offered his unorthodox investigative method in a Time magazine interview during a discussion about the media's coverage of celebrity news. "I said something to the 'Nightline' guy about waterboarding, and if the Bush administration didn't think it was torture, they ought to do some personal investigation," King recounted to Time. "Someone in the Bush family should actually be waterboarded so they could report on it to George."
