National Book Awards Acceptance Speeches
Stephen King
Recipient of the National Book Foundation's Medal for
DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTION TO AMERICAN LETTERS AWARD, 2003
This speech may not be reproduced in any form without written permission.
Photo Credit: Chris Buck Thank you very much. Thank you all. Thank you for the applause and thank you for coming. I'm delighted to be here but, as I've said before in the last five years, I'm delighted to be anywhere.
This isn't in my speech so don't take it out of my allotted time. There are some people who have spoken out passionately about giving me this medal. There are some people who think it's an extraordinarily bad idea. There have been some people who have spoken out who think it's an extraordinarily good idea. You know who you are and where you stand and most of you who are here tonight are on my side. I'm glad for that. But I want to say it doesn't matter in a sense which side you were on. The people who speak out, speak out because they are passionate about the book, about the word, about the page and, in that sense, we're all brothers and sisters. Give yourself a hand.

    A is for... Hearts in Atlantis
      King's collection, now in paperback and first published in late 1999, has five tales of childhood and college days in the 1960s, intertwined so that it reads more like a novel than a collection of novellas. King didn't go to Vietnam, high blood pressure and burst ear-drums prevented him, but that war haunts these stories as students protest, are drafted and survive or change because of it. Less to do with the war is the opening story, which some consider the best, Low Men in Yellow Coats . Here the monsters from King's Dark Tower series are invading a small town and only impoverished kid Bobby and his mum's lodger Ted Brautigan can fight them. Local bullies are turning on the kid too echoing one of King's favourite books, Lord of the Flies . King is once again at his best evoking pictures from our own childhood and formative years...

      There is a huge debate going on between fans about whether the "new", less ghastly Stephen King books are as good as the classics. One camp declares not, the books are less gripping and scary than before and it is after all "horror" that they read the books for. The other camp sees the move towards more reflective and realistic situations as a sign of maturity and that "serious" literature reviewers can now take King much more seriously. I fall somewhere between the two. I certainly don't want to read formula novels where the author's heart is clearly not in them -

    Stephen King's Net Horror Story
    Posted by JonKatz on Mon Dec 04, 2000 10:30 AM
    from the -truth-about-digital-publishing- dept. Five months ago, in the name of authorial independence and technological empowerment (not to mention money), Stephen King decided to bypass his publisher and sell his serial novel The Plant directly to readers over the Net. The story is about a predatory vine that terrorizes a small publishing house. Last week, the experiment was suspended. Whether or not he scared his e-readers, King instantly traumatized the publishing industry, which suddenly had to confront its worst nightmare technologically-empowered writers end-running Stone Age marketing notions to tell their own stories and sell them to readers without middlemen. An analysis. var ad6 = 'active';

    The King and I
    It’s been a hell of a week, as it has taken me back some 30 years, to when I was a teenager enthralled with the words scribbled by a novelist from Maine, who painted dark and scary pictures in my head. Those pictures still linger and haunt me. They are images torn from nightmares, from a fevered imagination; yet they’re instilled with a deep understanding of the human condition. I’d say that this writer is one of the reasons why the horror-fiction genre blossomed in the 1970 and ’80’s. And even though that genre has since imploded, taking down with it lesser-known talents, the work of this wordsmith from Maine can still be found on bookshelves all over the world. There on all those spines, you will find his majestic surname: King.

    S tephen King chews another grape and smiles happily. The first reviews of his latest novel, Lisey's Story , have begun to trickle in on this, the first day of publication, and all are hugely positive. They may, in fact, be the best reviews of his career, and his delight, even 33 years after the publication of his first book, is genuine and undisguised.
    The pleasure he takes in them has a number of roots. It's clear that Lisey's Story is important to him, which is why he has taken to the promotional trail for the first time in seven years in order to publicise it. He knows that it is one of his best books, a beautifully written study of a long marriage and the grief that follows the death of a spouse, as well as an examination of the sometimes ambivalent relationship between the writer and the creative process. "Every long marriage has two hearts, one light and one dark," as the book puts it at one point and, even if King is keener to point out the ways in which it differs from his own life rather than the resemblances, it is obvious that this is an intensely personal book for him.
    "I thought it was the best one when I had written it," he says. "I think you get a feeling about certain books. Sometimes I feel like a baseball player in that some books feel like singles and some books feel like doubles and every so often you get a
