DesiLit's S. Asian and S. Asian Diaspora Annotated Bibliography
(compiled by Mary Anne Mohanraj) This is a list in progress (and hopefully always will be) an ongoing, comprehensive bibliography of South Asian and diaspora literature, encompassing fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and drama, for works either written in English, or available in English translation. It is currently rather minimal, but we hope long-term to add detailed bibliographic information and possibly brief descriptions as well, to help readers find the books they want to read. If you have additions, suggestions, or corrections for this list, please send them to m@mamohanraj.com, with the Subject line: DESILIT BOOKLIST. Thank you! Last updated: January 22, 2005

The Kite Runner
by Khaled Hosseini
About the Author
Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, the son of a diplomat father and teacher mother. In 1976 the family was relocated to Paris, France, where they remained until 1980 following the Soviet takeover of Afghanistan. They were then granted political asylum in the United States and moved to San Jose, California. Hosseini's parents left everything behind and relied on welfare until they were able to get back on their feet. Hosseini became a physician, but he had always loved to write. In The Kite Runner , Hosseini returns to the pre-Soviet Afghanistan of his childhood. Contemporary Authors Online , Gale, 2004. Farmington Hills, Mich.: Thomson Gale. 2004.

Synopsis: AWARD NOMINATED AUTHOR. AWARD WINNING ILLUSTRATOR. Each day is a struggle for a young refugee boy from Afghanistan. He hauls heavy buckets of water to his family's mud hut. Hungry or not, he works hard at school and learning a craft. Most difficult of all, he might fight off the wrenching memories of the tragic events that made him lose his father and flee from his home. Yet even in the stark conditions of the refugee camp, this young boy refuses to let his imagination be stifled. In his beautiful carpets, he weaves another world, one filled with the blue of a clear sky, the green of life, and many, many red roses. By creating this small piece of paradise, he makes a place where dreams are possible. Rukhsana Khan's poignant tribute to hope was inspired by her meeting with one unforgettable boy and his family.
