    Description from the publisher:
Ami loves her chicken better than me. She calls her Bibi, I call her silly.
Rani's mother loves Bibi the chicken more than her. At least that's what Rani thinks. That silly chicken gets all the attention, and Rani just can't stand it. Even worse, Bibi seems to know she's the favorite! But when Bibi disappears one afternoon, Rani realizes how sad her mother is. Will Rani's jealousy disappear, too?
Set in rural Pakistan and illustrated with lively, expressive illustrations, this original take on sibling rivalry is hilarious and poignant at the same time.

see cover art permission Looking at the collection of picture books on my young child's bookshelf, I'm struck by the uniqueness of each artist's approach, whether it's a simple cartoon style with gobs of white space, lush watercolors that bleed off the page, or wacky collages that pull together unexpected elements. The way each artist's personality jumps off the page is part of what I love about picture books. But as much as I love picture book art, it isn't very often that an artist gets under my skin the way R. Gregory Christie has.
Christie's acrylic illustrations are a compelling blend of realism and distortion. In his first book, The Palm of My Heart

Transcripts of email and telephone interviews with children s writers of South Asian origin, and informal discussions that followed.
    http://www.umakrishnaswami.com/interviews.html
Interviews with children's/YA writers of South Asian origin
Between September and December 2002, I began looking for writers who, like me, had family or cultural links to the Indian subcontinent, write in English for young people, and live outside the region we know as South Asia. The result was an article , "On the Seashore of Worlds: Selected South Asian Voices from North America and the United Kingdom." It appears in the April 2004 issue of Bookbird, the Journal of IBBY (the Internation Board on Books for Young people). Here are the transcripts, edited for consistency of format and punctuation, of the phone and e-mail exchanges I had with Rukhsana Khan Rachna Gilmore Jamila Gavin , and Tanuja Desai Hidier . Some of the material from these exchanges can also be found in an online article, "South Asian VoicesWith North American Accents," on the PaperTigers website.
Rukhsana Khan Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2002 21:33:32 -0700 1. Tell me how and when you began writing for young people. Why writing, and why this audience? I first began writing for children when I was sixteen and I wrote my 'first' picture book. But I seriously began writing for children thirteen years ago. I never considered writing for adults because my favourite books were children's books and classics like Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Charlotte Bronte, Thomas Hardy.
